Dodge Ram 6.4 Heavy duty V-8 gas

Says premium gas is recommended?..

What is the downside if regular gas is used?
Some folks are telling me nothing other than a slight decrease in power?..

Ram dealers in my neck of the woods are selling 2500 Ram quad cab 4x4 for $38K.....

I sure could use a boost in ponies towing 5500# travel trailer with a 5.0 Ford half ton.

You can use either one. When I had my 6.4 I ran regular for the first year. After talking to a bunch of people running premium I started to also. I found the truck ran a lot better, had better mileage and found it had more power. But I wasn't going from 87 to 89. I was running 91 or 94 octane.

Interestings.......I had always thought each particular refiner concocted their own particular version of "top tier"..

This would seem a 3rd party is formulating the chemicals

Do you think that "top tier" gasoline is just a marketing phrase or actually a better grade of fuel?.

Chevron advertises "Techron"....and there is a chemical sold that is supposedly "Techron", only in a can.

Arco sells "top tier" fuel.....says so right on the pump!!

The ethanol added fuels actually do have slightly higher knock resistance vs non-ethanol of the same octane.

But it does reduce gas mileage.

The are pros and cons to e10, like most things.

I preferred to run premium in my Ecoboost, not so much for the higher octane (I never really noticed the diff) but for the other additives that supposedly keep the engine cleaner, reducing carbon build-up. "Top-Tier" gas was also high on my list.

I've run nothing but 87 in both my '14 and now my '17 6.4. No ticking or knocking even when towing my 5er.

Most premium gas in our area has ethanol. In the past yr or so there's one chain of convenience store that now has ethanol free premium. And for a premium price too. Around .40c a gal more.

My 2017 with the 6.4 says 89 recommended but not required. Runs and tows fine with 87 for me.

My Subaru with the H6 on the other hand says minimum 91 octane and runs very poorly on anything less.

It's possible the issue with using low octane fuel when towing is the slow build up of carbon.
So saving a few dollars here and there may cause you big headaches in the future.

I have the higher HP version of that eng in my SRT. I'm not worried about a few bucks every fill-up so it always gets the good stuff.

I suggest if you are around sea level and in hot weather towing that you buy premium. Ex: if you pull Davis dam I suggest you get premium.

Anything above 3K or so and in cooler weather I would not worry about it.

The down side is you're going to lose a handful of HP and the engine "could" run a "little" hotter.
