Dogs in TT's

I know this is kind of an odd question, but we're dog show people new to RV's and will be leaving in a few days for our first dog show with our Travel Trailer. Are there folks out there who travel, leaving their pets back in the trailer when you drive? If so, any tips on how you make things safe for them? Any bad consequences besides the obvious?
thanks

That's a great idea. Those things can expand quite a bit.

I have seen a bicycle inner tube used to seal between cab and cap windows. I have no idea how well it worked but it is cheap enough.
Twenty six foot 2010 Dutchmen Lite pulled with a 2011 EcoBoost F-150 4x4.

Just right for Grandpa, Grandma and the dog.

There are "boots" you can get to "seal" off between the cab, and cover. We used one when our kids traveled back there when towing the pup. Yeah the KIDS rode in the back of the truck every camping trip we took. deal with that.

I mounted a seat in from a mini van in the back of my pick-up. Because there was a cap on the truck and seat belts it was legal in Ohio.

I have seen many different types of truck bed toppers and some actually eliminate the tailgate and have narrow hinged up right door for access, which might solve your problem. I wonder if they can seal to the rear of the cab so you can regular the temperature with the ac in the truck through a sliding rear window.

Boy oh Boy...you know this thread has made me laugh...all these well intentioned folks who consider putting a dog in a travel trailer as the hieght of cruelty!

Lets get real for a moment. MOST of the dogs in the developing world, ASIA, AFRICA and parts of the MIDDLE EAST to say nothing of RUSSIA would give their RIGHT PAW for the chance to live with someone who loved them enough to ALLOW them to ride in the Trailer! Imagine it from their perspective...It's WARM! and DRY! and I AM WITH MY PACK! And theres FOOD! OH MY GOD I AM IN HEAVEN. And no VICIOUS DOGS to steal my FOOD! NO ONE KICKING ME! or THROWING ROCKS AT ME! THAT is what the dog is thinking.

Most of the world laughs at us the way we treat our pets. And most Dogs of the world would do anything to trade places with ours...even if they have to ride in the trailer...

So to the naysayers I say...relax this is all perspective. In comparison to what the lives are of most dogs on this planet it doesnt even register on the scale of "difficult" much less cruel or abusive.

Guess some how I just don't get it. If your pet is a burden just get rid of it. Many of us assume people get pets and treat them as part of the family. If my pet was such a burden I would find another good home for him. Jake, my ACD, is a family member. I wouldn't ask the dog to do anything I wouldn't. One exception, Jake doesn't eat people food. Our MH is a mess. Hair all over, and I stumble over dog toys. But I wouldn't have it any other way. If you have to ask how to treat your pet you shouldn't have one. Nuff said.

you live in the nasty, and you want to put down someone who asks a honest question?

I like my dog. But I ain't wearing his hair, and I am not cooking with his hair in the pot.

If I didn't want to put up with shedding pets and dirt they track in I would get rid of my dog. My dog is part of our fsmily. I'm not perfect neither is my dog. I dislike people that apoarently have pets for status or whatever. They chain up, cage, leave pets outside 24/7/365. Why do they even want a pet? My neighbor leaves their dog outside 24/7/365 in WY @ 20 and 30 below zero. I would be ashamed to treat a pet like that. Plus keep in mind I don't even qualify for a pound dog on our ranch. only cow barb wire. No jails or caged areas for my pet outside. Mainly because my dog lives inside our warm abode when it is 20 below zero. JMHO. Mistreat your pet how you want. You will get no apology from me for treating Jake like a family member. My wife or kid wouldn't ride in a TT on the road and neither would my dog Jake.

Yes my dog lives out side 24/7/365. I am not cruel enough to coop her up in the house. She likes it out there, will NOT come in. So I let her live the way she wants. And BTW. Bringing an outside dog in on cold nights usually makes them sick, and then cold when they have to go back out. They are conditioned, and built to be outside. Notice the finely crafted fur coat.

And No. I will not eat dog fur, or wear it either. It's just nasty. You live the way you want though.
BTW. You have a ranch. Which room do your cows, sheep or horses sleep in?

There are a few topics that generate serious responses and often not done politely. We're supposed to be about helping others enjoy a common interest, right? Many times I've wished folks had to sign their real name to a post...bet they wouldn't be so obnoxious. Even worse when it's a newbie that just steps into it. So sorry, it's not usually like that.

We are serious dog people, too. But I wouldn't consider chewing someone out or making disparaging comments online. It's very possible to disagree with respect. Wish manners and consideration would make a comeback.

Thanks - not that big of a deal - we're gonna put them on the back seat (crew cab) and deal with it. Will make sure to re-evaluate when I buy my next truck.

OP has already stated he is not putting the dogs in the TT, and yet the finger wagging continues....awful lot of judgmental responses to a guy asking a simple question.

Blangen....not a bad doggie dad at all. Sometimes you just have to go with Plan B, like it or not. The fact that you didn't just unload your best buddies says a lot for you and your care of them. Glad things worked out well.

dvitale300, thanks for doing your part in rescue. We've been in rescue for most of our 52 years and it's for sure a win/win. Fully understand you're trying to do the best you can for your dogs and in the safest way. This would certainly be a bit easier if you had a couple of 10# pups. It appears that you may not have any choices other than the TT. Suggest you not just gate them, but use your wire crates and secure them well. Would not feed them just before traveling and water is a mess, but ice cubes will get you through the day. When you make the potty stop, just add more ice cubes to their bowls. Further down the line you may find that a Class C or A will work better for you. Friends in FL rescue and also show Irish and Gordons. They have a C, modified the rear area to put the crates securely and everyone is together.

Sorry you ended up with some ignorant comments...happens sometimes. FYI....never, never ask about tires! It'll make this thread seem tame. Trust me on this.

Good luck on your show and thanks again for the rescues.

Good luck on your show. We've never done shows, just our rescues and love being able to help as many as we can.

Well....I tried to lighten-up another dog thread, but like most, it seems to have taken the normal direction.

Our dog is our only child, only pet, and I have enjoyed her a lot.

People laugh when they see her out hunting with me, wearing a bright pink sweater. She only weighs 15 lbs., but I have to say, she is a much better bird dog, than driver.

Hope some folks have a better day today.

WyoTraveler: I certainly hope you reported your neighbors to the proper authorities for animal cruelty on that -30 night. That would be constructive activism on behalf of animals. Flaming someone online behind your anonymous keyboard is not constructive.

You were not asked to apologize for how you treat your dog. Your passive-aggressive self victimization is transparent and inappropriate. Your self righteous and mean comments to the poster speak louder about your character than your self proclaimed love of animals.

I used a lot of big words. Look them up.

Wyo traveler my Collies are part of my family as well. They share my house, trailer and truck. They are one of the reason's I bought a RV.
