Dometic refrigerator wire shelf replacement

Question

The plating on the shelves in my Dometic refrigerator is coming off. I looked on the Dometic site and they want almost $60 apiece for shelves and then charge extra for the swing up guards! I keep the shelves wiped clean - is the loss of plating a health hazard or just cosmetic? Is there a cheaper alternative to the manufacturer's parts?

Thanks, but they are not vinyl - they are plated.

Hi,I scrapped mine and then used rust paint on them. They look better than new.I created thin plastic liners for them that should help with the inevitable spills.

Sorry, I know this is an old thread, but I believe I am missing a shelf (compared the the same refrigerator from my previous camper).  I've seen places selling the Dometic Refrig wire shelf for $60!  I guess I could go to my Big Box Store and buy a piece of wire shelf and cut it down.  Anyone else try that?
