Yes, if I wanted to go camping. I guess we were less sensitive in the day than now. We also had more bruises and cuts from getting the brother to stay under control. :)

Most quad bunk models are very large campers with heavy hitch weights. This necessitates a 3/4 ton to a 1 ton truck so that you get the payload you need for a large family and the heavy hitch weight.

A double over a double (none slide model) usually necessitates a 3/4 ton or a 1/2 ton truck with a high payload. With a large family as yours, it would be a crew cab truck so you'd be best off with a F150 w/HD payload package or a 3/4 ton truck.

If you go with a model like mine which is a single over double, you'll get more storage. I didn't want a double over double for 2 reasons. You lose the dresser over the bottom double size bunk and it makes getting into the top bunk very hard for smaller kids since most models don't come with a ladder due to the small entrance opening for the beds.

If you do get a double over double size bunk bed with a superslide, you'll likely get a tall closet/ward for the kids but then you'll definitely need a 3/4 ton to keep from going over your GVWR of your truck.

If you're one of the many with a 1/2 ton truck or SUV with a payload of only 1400 lbs or under, you may have to go with a smaller trailer and use a sofa and/or dinette as the sleeping areas for the kids.

I wouldn't go over GVWR because in an 'emergency' situation, the truck may not be able to handle an emergency maneuver and lose control. That's usually why there are those ratings, for the unforeseen emergency situation.

If my parents took us camping, which they did not, they could have told me I was sleeping outside on the ground and I wouldn't have given it a second thought.

I'm glad I can give better comforts to my children, but society is loosing touch with making the best of what you have.

I had no choice, AND had to walk 3 miles uphill both ways to school every day!

We have quad bunks and really like them.

The kids are 12, 10, and 6. My 12 year old is 5'6" and my 10 year old is 5'2". So, not little and growing fast.
Be careful when you look into the quad bunks, some of the bunks max out at 100# and are short! What's the point in that?

I have to be honest, what I like most about the quad bunks is that the kids stay in the bunkhouse. They have their own room with a door on it that closes. I love my kids to pieces, but I also love that they have their own space and we have our own space. Now that they're older, they wake up together and play in the morning before even coming out of their room.

We don't plan on any kids sharing a bed. We plan to put one on the couch. I know what you mean about the fighting!

We went double over double for a few reasons. First, it allowed for an overall shorter trailer. Second, our two boys are going to be huge, and single bunks are a joke. Our last trailer had them, and they were like coffins, small ones.

So, they each get a larger bed for 90% of our trips, and we can fit 2 friends when they chose.

Depends on how many times you are willing to put up with "(so and so) is touching meeeeeeeee!"


I would never consider double over double for 3 kids. Make your life easier. I've had my 6'2" friend sleep in our TT bunks and he was perfectly comfy and not cramped.

We have a quad bunk and use the extra bunks for storage.
