Dually tire replacement upcharge

So today I brought my Ram dually in for rear tires. The shop wanted to upcharge me $20.00 per tire because they said changing rear dually tires requires more work. When I told him to cancel my order the fee was waived. When asked what the extra work was he said Duallyโ€™s have double lug nuts. My reaction was Um, no. I said that doing the four rear tires was easier than four tires on a 3/4 ton. 32 lugs to remove for tire from a 3/4 ton. 16 for the rear on a 1 ton dually.

What are your thoughts?

You try throwing around dually wheels and see if you don't think its worth spending a few more $$$$! People Spend $60-$90k on a truck and then get cheap when it comes to maintenance!

$20 per tire is excessive, but a dually should and does cost more to do a rotate. if shops aren't charging a bit more then they aren't a very good shop as it shows they don't pay attention.

That is legit.

I agree with the op's point that a dually only has half as many lug nuts per tire as a SRW vehicle so in fact he should have gotten a discount.

The OP never said that it was a dealership but it sure sounds like something a dealership would pull.

No, local shop that up til now was pretty stand up. Rarity for my neck of the woods.

OP be sure to get your front aligned to 1/64" toe. This stops the outer edge "Stepping".

ONLY rotate the fronts side to side keeping rotation the same. YES than means dismounting the tires from wheels. Puts both outside edges on the inside.

I have 44k on my DRW tires and all 6 measure 5/32" tread depth. Rears never get touched.

Run 80 psi fronts all the time and 30 psi unloaded rear and inflate to what the chart dictates per your rear tires weight plus 5psi.

What prompted this rear tire change at 40k was one tire was bald. The rest were seven years old but had good tread left.

I am curious what your response has to do with I said?

Well, you mentioned that your rears have 44k with 5/32โ€ left. I was just mentioning that mine had 40k and only one was bald. Thatโ€™s what prompted the replacement. I had posted a week ago asking what would cause that one tire to go bald. I was advised to replace all the tears due to age.

Just stating why I replaced it.

But if youโ€™re not swapping front to back, rotating the fronts side to side to change rotation direction will smooth out tread feathering or minor cupping. Flipping the tires on the rim will even out outside tread wear from cornering, if youโ€™re experiencing that.
Only time thatโ€™s been a factor is living/driving in the mountains full time, or on heavy dually truck front ends (little tires lots of weight).

He was correct when talking bigger trucks, but haven't seen that on my last three Dually 3500 series trucks.

In times past, he and you where right. But for at least a quarter century most big truck have had hub-piloted wheels, no longer have the inner/outer nuts you refer to.

Freightliner used the double lug nuts into at least the late 90s.

OP, shop was just trying to get extra $ out of you. This is fairly normal. Not right, but SOP for a lot of shops.
