first timer

Wife and I decided to get our first TT
Narrowed it to Winnebago and Jayco for quality.Any other brands I'm missing?
Something 20'-25'
Also what other costs are we looking at?
Sway bars,solar??
thanks
  • Both are decent brands with a good sized following. Since your in Utah think about where you want to camp, if in RV parks with hookups most atrailers are fine and are set up for that. If you plan on a lot of dry camping/boondocking, with no hookups, pay close attention to tank sizes, water storage, especially waste becomes your biggest issue. after power.
WDH with anti-sway is largely a given anymore, Solar can cover most power needs other than AC so long as you are frugal with TV and lights.
  • Welcome to the forum.

Make sure you have enough Tow Vehicle before you sign any papers or give the seller any money.

And do not believe the sales person when they tell you your tow vehicle will safely pull anything they are selling.
Verify the towing capacity, weights, etc..

Don't hesitate to ask questions on the forum. Someone will have the answer.

    Enjoy your travels.
  • I'm a Winnebago TT fan but the newer Minnie models may not have sufficient fresh water capacity in that size for your intended use. Ways around it...carry a couple of 5 gallon cans...up to you.
  • The trailer floor plan, the cargo rating (not the tow rating)of the tow vehicle, and the cost all have to be correct.

Once you decide on what you like, that you can pull and afford; Then rent a similar unit for a week or ten days.

You will learn a lot about WD hitches, gas mileage, travel distances, towing speeds; before you spend the big bucks. We did.

    Good luck
  • Take your time and make sure it's the floor plan you want. Spend hours and days looking and walking around different RV's, there is no rush to buy.

As far as expenses go....hold onto your wallet. You will most likely purchase-hitches, hoses, sewer connections, kitchen items, outdoor lights and rugs, along with 100 other items. A lot of this can be done reasonably but it adds up. Don't forget about storage fees, if you can't store at your house. This is not a cheap hobby, but the money is secondary every time I hear how excited my 5 year old is about going camping.
  • Slow your roll. Don't plan to buy anything for about 9 months. Now is the time to start educating yourself before you make a big mistake.

Have you been camping before in an TT?
Do you know how big of a TT you realistically need/want?
Do you know exactly how you will be using it? (campgrounds vs. boondocking and what the difference is)
Do you know what quality in a TT looks like or what it really costs?
Do you know what the limits are on your vehicle for towing?
Do you know that you can spend $5k or more on a solar system and never need it?

You'll spend many thousands for a TT and a few more thousand furnishing it, and you haven't even move out of the driveway yet. Then there's a hit to your gas mileage, campground costs, firewood, lots of maintenance, and then there's activities while your camping unless your just going to sit in the trailer. This is not a cheap hobby. This is a lifestyle you need to want to do and it costs money.

Spend your time on educating yourself before you spend your money. You can get your education the hard way but it's cheaper to spend your time first instead of spending your money first.

Start with what your vehicle can handle. Learn and Research

X2...Had a person tell me that my 1965 Chevy C-10 would easily haul a 30+ foot TT...Uhhh....NO. Even with the suspension upgrades I put into it, I wouldn't take the chance.
