fixed skylight dome 1422

While replacing a cracked fixed 1422 skylight dome on my AF 25R, I got to wondering, what use is the inner dome? It certainly limits the amount of light transmission to the interior. I prefer a brighter interior during the day. Has anyone removed their inner dome and replaced it with a simple garnish? If so, how do you like it?
If I need insulation, I can stuff one of those foam plugs in temporarily. Your thoughts?
  • I always thought the purpose of the inner dome was to provide a little insulation and help prevent condensation.

Of course, thank you. Don't know what I was thinking.
  • The inner dome keeps the outer dome from sweating. If it sweats, the condensation will run down the insides of the opening, collect and run under the ceiling panel, soaking the roof insulation and running inside the ceiling making its way to the inside of the walls and eventually to the floor. Lots and lots of water damage. The same damage rain water will cause if the outer skylight dome leaks.
