Flipping Axles

All,

I am looking at flipping my axles on my 1989 Fleetwood Taurus trailer. I found a place that does them at a good price.

I have read some negative things online about more sway and braking issues.

Also, this:

Before You Flip Your Axles, Consider This

The axles on your trailer come with a pre-existing camber (a vertical upward kink/bend in the axle center).

This camber allows the axle to flex with the weight of the trailer, and run with the tires square and true to the road.

Without camber, the weight of the trailer would force the tires to run unevenly on the road, causing premature tire wear, poor trailer tracking and damage to the running gear.

I don't know what this means.

Looking for some good advice on this.

I think I'm good with the way it's done. Any negatives after the flip?

@Old-Biscuit: Yes! That's it. Ok..I have a word for the part now: "perch". I have the tandem axle setup. Thanks!

@BB_TX: That's interesting. I will have to look when I get a chance. So...if it's bowed..then that would explain why you can't rotate it 180 degrees and reuse the original part that's weld onto the axle. There for the new part is weld 180 degrees and the axle remains in the same place it originally was mounted. Really - the only reason to remove the axles is to perform the welding I would think.

An axle has a slight bow to it. If you look carefully from the rear you can probably see that is higher in the center than at the ends. Appears to be bent. That is normal and should look the same after the axle is moved below the springs.

@Lynnmor:

Yes I am aware there is a part welded to opposite side when they remove the axle. This is the similar/same part that's on the original on it's opposite side. Is this what is considered the camber?

It means that you DO NOT actually flip the axles, you simply move them from above the spring to below the spring. New spring mounts will need to be welded on to accomplish this.
