Not a bad choice! If you are stuck on Ford then go for it. The MPG's will be down. I had a v10 dually and averaged about 9.5 mpg empty. If you are very aggressive in your driving you will not get 12-13 MPG.
My 97 F150 5.4 got about 13.5 so the F350 getting 13 would be awesome.
However, you can get a Ram 3500 with the 6.4L V8 Hemi. This one has the MDS and is reported to get a little better MPG.
I do understand how you feel. My 08 F150 is getting 17-17.5 in mixed driving. Gonna be tough swallowing 12-13 MPG when I move to a HD gasser in the future.
