Ford Ecoboost to 6.2L Economy

Time for a new truck. I'm looking at a F350 4x4 crew long bed with the 6.2l. I got really spoiled to mid 16's mpg cty/hwy mixed on the F150 for my commute. So come on...I can take it. How much of a hit will I take on economy?

I think you are comparing apples to oranges. ie normally asperated to twin turbo. :h

I have never towed with a 3.73 in a 6.2, mine has the 4.30. My 6.2 doesn't seem to put out any pulling power under 2000 rpm. So at 2200 in 6th that puts me right at 65 towing a 10K fifth wheel.

I dare say that if i had 3.73's I would never be in 6th unless down hill.

Keep the R's up to a reasonable point in the 6.2, relax and quit lamenting about the greatest little motor you used to have. :W

JMHO, I still am pleased after 52K on my F250 gasser.

I will say for safety, I really think the brakes on the F250 saved my @$$ yesterday. And it feels more stable. I'll learn to live with the engine. I had a tailwind yesterday and the tow was much better but still downshifted more than I liked.

Towing...first impressions. Now I don't have a light trailer, and I knew I'd miss the engine out of my F150. For those who have no time towing with a 3.5l Ecoboost should probably stop reading. You don't have a clue.

The 6.2l feels sufficient unloaded. Its peppy and gave me high hopes for towing. Under a load, its simply lacking. Now the chassis on the F250 is the greatest thing since sliced bread. This thing tows straight with confidence.
The bed barely squats with 1200lbs. I could forget I had a trailer, if not for the engine. And it goes down to the road just fine....well....unless the guy in front of you cuts a fart. Then you downshift to 3rd gear while turning over 3500 rpms. These are things my EB lugs out in 5th. Honestly, if I had towed before buying, I'd have bought another F150. There, I said it.

lol - that's a good description.

As far as the engine goes, you gotta let it rev up to make power. That's just part of the deal with a NA gas truck. If you want the chassis and the effortless power you need to look at one of the big diesels.

Yup accurate description. They're good engines, but yeah, they don't pull like an Eco, or really any better than a 5.0 in my experience. With all the big power gassers now like Econboosts and the SRT hemis and huge number diesels, I half expected to have 500hp/500ft lb HD truck gassers by now not the 400/400s that are getting long in the tooth.
But like you, I'd rather tow the weight with a HD chassi and all my gassers have been company trucks, so I run em like a rental when they're asked to do a diesel's job.

If you look back to my post on page 3, I stated that the only way you would find an engine that would feel and preform like your EcoBoost would be to get a diesel!
If you feel that way now pulling 8K dry TT, what happens when DW wants a 5er at 35โ€™ that weighs 12K+, maybe the dealer will let you swap for a 6.7 for very little loss.

Buck,

If I recall you missed the 3.5 EB as well when you opted for the bigger truck. I think you sized up so you could tow the boat behind the fifth wheel. Thought about you when I read this post.

Good luck,

Mine won't go down to 3rd gear unless I'm on a pretty steep incline pulling close to 10K.

Your expectations are different than what the 6.2 wants to deliver.

This engine loves to work between 3000 and 4000 RPMs. And if it has to do it in 3rd then that that's where the transmission puts it. I rarely see anything over 4000.

It has just as much torque as your EB, just at higher RPMs.

Put it in tow haul, lock out 6th and drive the snot out of it. And enjoy the sound of a V8.

Oh, and I'm pretty sure it has a 48 gallon tank. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Nice truck. I think backup cameras are standard safety on all vehicles now days. I've been goggling the XL's too a little online, my next truck I want the vinyl floor. Not near ready for a new one but it's fun to look. ๐Ÿ™‚

XLT has some nice economical options, and has vinyl floor option. Probably the sweet spot on price and retained value.

Reset this morning and made the 16 mile commute, mixed city/highway (50/50), hyper-miled every chance I got. Squeezed 15.2mpg out of it. Frankly, it's got more pep and is getting better economy than my ex-2006 F250 powerstroke did (at least before a tune). Pretty pleased so far.

I pick up my trailer tomorrow. Can't wait to tow!

Already been buttering the wife up. May take 3 years but definitely want to upgrade the wheels/tires when the time comes.

Funny thing, I couldn't get this deal on any other color. 9 out of 10 trucks out here are white. I guess it's preferred in the oil field. $40k OTD. That's within 2 grand or so of what I paid for my F150. Pretty happy with the deal.

Nice looking truck and the interiors have certainly stepped up in quality on the lower trim levels. Once the original rubber wears out you can sharpen it up a lot with aftermarket wheels and some decent AT tires. Good call on the color but I'm biased.
