TFL Truck tested them all towing 12,000# 5ers at a Ford press event.

All 3 had 3.73 axles according to Ford.

The truck that can put the most horsepower to the rear wheels for most of the run will win.

Torque rating of the engine has nothing to do with it.

in this case the Ford was able to do that mainly because it can produce 40+ more horsepower than the other two.

The reason they did not do the entire hill in my opinion the ford would have been able to exceed the 70 mph speed limit.

It is also possible the Ram and Chevy could also exceed the 70 mph speed limit on part of the hill.

Proper scientific test 🙂

I heard this at the Flying J:

Rotating engines can only produce torque, which does the work.

Which is why the nearly 400hp RAM Cummings cannot do the work in 12 hours at the speed limit that a 400hp ISX Cummings can do in a heavy duty truck hauling 80,000lbs, expressed in tons moved x distance in 12 hrs., at the speed limit.

Did I remember that right?

I was"Born and Raised" in that part of WV...This part of the Interstate goes through the New River Gorge on I 64 from Sandstone Falls (located on New River), and intersects I77 heading into Beckley, (north), or Bluefield, (south).. I've towed this stretch numerous times, last time was about a month ago towing my 5er loaded to 16,200#...Don't know why they didn't do the entire run of the mountain....It's a 6% grade going into a 7% grade for about the last 2 and a half miles or so, though the entire run is closer to 6 miles....speed limit is 7. I didn't slow down to 50 mph to hit a certain point to see how my truck performed up the 7% grade part, but running 60-65 mph, I've topped that mountain, towing this 5er at 65 mph, but again, I didn't slow to 50 to at that mile marker...but believe next time I tow my 5er up that mountain, I'm going to slow to 50 mph until I hit the mark they did and see if I can accelerate back up to 60 mph or so...

My 5er weighs 4,000# more than the one's being towed, but nevertheless, I'm curious as to how my truck will do the way these guy's ran the mountain.

It's funny, I never even bothered to look at the video until later last night, (figure I already knew the results), but when I did, it was like a home coming in a way...never thought I'd see a place I'm VERY familiar with in one of these test..kinda cool, no matter who won.:)

Actually, I would believe that torque has a bit to do with this test as well. I realize HP is great, but going up a grade like this call torque into play as well?

Short answer is no. Torque gets a things moving. This was a running start, and maybe Ford wanted it that way as it created an advantage. Their torque limiting may have put them in third place. My guess is this was not their first runs. Something could be fishy! Chris

I'm not saying the Ford wouldn't win, it has the HP over the ram and the GM so the win should go to the Ford. The complaint is they say this is a head to head challenge with identical trucks and trailers but it is NOT. Now we find out that not only did they not have the same trailers they also had at least six different trucks. Also it looks like they ran them with both trailers, so again why?

Here is a simple way to do this ONE trailer and only one trailer and hook it up to each truck and make your runs! But nope that would give us a true test and Ford can't/won't do that!

Do you know how many auto journalist was at the event? Tighten your seatbelt cause there will be more public tests and it could get bumpy. :W

Heck, I bet you got neighbors and friends of friends and a brothers, uncles, sisters half cousin who can give us all the scoop on how many WAS there, or were there and their names, where they live, what they ate at IHOP, and on....you're a regular "rumor mill"..

seatbelts automatically tighten, don't have to tighten them yourself anymore

NC,
It's these type of response's that has made many good folks leave this site/forum. The strategy is if you don't have anything to bring to the table than just discredit the people you disagree with.

Nice job NC.... but you just qualified for the block feature.

Adios....

I guess you really see the difference in torque

It was a relatively light load at 12000 pounds and the ram was sort of winded keeping 60mph

I need to buy a truck, I wish the ram had more HP or the Ford had a better interior

The Chevy and Ram have about the same horsepower. Horsepower is what counts. I would expect it to be a toss up with the Chevy and Ram. It all depends which has the gear that best fits the hill.

The Ram only beat the Chevy by 5 seconds. Not much to brag about.
With the method of measuring the time the times could be off by a couple seconds.

If I was Ford I would be a little embarrassed that I only beat the Ram by less than 20 seconds and had a 50+ horsepower advantage.

I doubt they were towing 12,000 lbs. I have a 5th wheel that has a GVW of 11,600 but the dry weight is 7148.

Or perhaps RAM should be embarrassed as being the first looser! :W

Whats a "looser"? Oh, you mean "loser"....my bad....yeah, I like the underdog, which, once again, Ram is according to Ford, or you.....That's why I like the Ram even better now than before...if I didn't, I would have stuck with my Chevy's, (yeah, I know you don't like to hear about it, but I got a history with Chevrolet's)..

It is just advertising. It is no different then that silly tailgate test Ram did where they did not locate the trucks the same on the ramps.

The article on Pickuptrucks.com mentions that there were sandbags in the beds of the trucks that were carrying lighter RVs to even the weight. They were at the same press event and did their own comparison.
