Why do y’all assume he’s using a GM Crate motor?
And the “cheaper than a new truck” argument is the dumbest argument ever, in this scenario. It’s also cheaper than a new class A or a condo in Maui or the hope diamond, but the comparison between a 30 year old pickup and a new pickup, even if the old one is hot rodded up is still like comparing apples and toothpaste.
Fun project, yes.
Practical tow rig? No
Not even close to practical.
Compare it to similarly priced options and decide if it’s the best choice, not some pie in the Sky $60k NEW truck.
Besides, it’s 2020, not 1990 anymore. Big pulling power, if that’s what you want, doesn’t come from gas engines. You have to pull up to the green pump handles if you want real pulling power.
Now, a 12V swap makes more sense. Costs less, more torque and way better mileage.
Plenty of plug n play (almost) kits for that. As long as you’re a good wrench.
