Fuel mileage - Dodge 6.4 Hemi

Been a long time since I have posted here but it is getting close to time to start truck shopping. My 02 Silverado with the 6.0 gasser is getting tired. I have my eye on the Dodge 6.4 hemi in the 3/4 ton 4wd. Can someone please share your real world fuel mileage experience with this setup? Not expecting out of this world performance but would like to know what I can expect since it will be a daily driver for me. Can't afford a diesel so it will have to be a gasser for me. Thanks in advance for the help.

I've not towed with any but of the several I've driven, they all appear to get 19+ on the hiway running about 65mph. They were setup with 3.73 gearing, crew cab 4x4s.

This is my exact experience doing the same things. Stop/go traffic and winter blend fuel both really hurt MPGs. Once you get these trucks rolling they can do very well.

Hauling 11K 5th wheel I usually get around 8 and that includes mountains. The big gassers of a generation ago didn't do much better than that w/o the 5th wheel ๐Ÿ™‚

I pull and get almost exactly the same mpg as ib516 did. Just got 18.5 on a 186 mile trip not towing, just family of 4, 1 dog, and 4 bikes on a bike rack plus gear in the bed for days at the cabin, cruise set at 63. That was virtually no head wind or tail wind. I have gotten over 19 on a 190 mile trip but that was windy roads and speed topping out at about 55. It does great considering what it is. I have 4.10's also

Running solo 12-15 at 75 mph or more. Mileage depends on speed, wind and terrain. Should easy do 16s if on was to keep speed under 70.

Pulling a 14k toy hauler nets 6-8+ mpg. Effects of wind, hills and elevation are much greater with a heavy sail in tow.

I have a 2013 2500 4wd with 3.73 gear and the 5.7 Hemi and average 11-12 mpg in town, 15 mpg unloaded at 75mph highway, and 8.5mpg towing 7,000 lb TT at 65 mph. The 5.7 Hemi in the 2500 series truck is rated at 385hp and 400 lb ft of torque at 4,000 rpm.

We put on 6743 miles (North Idaho, Alaska, and return) and averaged 9.6 mpg on the dash, with 9.4 hand calculated. We're pulling a Cougar 279RKS fifth wheel that tops out at 10300 lbs--we're pretty close to max weight.
Our Ram is a 16, 2500, 6.4, 4 door, 4WD, with 373 gears.
Very happy!!!

Wow! What was your average speed for the trip?

My 6.4 gets terrible mileage towing, best I've seen is 11 MPG. My trailer is light weight too, only 3500 lbs. Driving speed is 55 almost always, my trailer tires are only rated for 60mph.

It's not a daily driver or grocery getter, if I'm not towing, I'm not driving it - can't give you any feedback on mpg as a daily driver / grocery getter.

My low mileage 06 Silverado with 6.0L gets 9 on a good day.

In my experience, getting 11 mpg on any gas vehicle towing a TT is great, not terrible. Your 3,500 lb TT has about the same frontal area drag as a 8,000 lb TT.

I accept it as part of the cost of camping. The 6.4 does get better mileage than my previous 5.7, which was 8-9 mpg towing the same trailer. The 5.7 had 3.92 gears, for what difference that made.

My 2014 6.4, CC, 4x4 and 6'4" box gets 8-9 towing my 9500 lb (loaded) trailer. It will drop lower when pulling mountains but from TX to FL I'll average the above. Unloaded it will get about 14 in town (we live in a smaller town) and I've seen 20 mpg on the highway at 65 mph. In W TX, driving about 78 mph, it will run 15 - 16 mpg depending on terrain and wind, which is virtually every day.

Edit: I have a 3.73 rear end.

A diesel will certainly get better, but 11 is great towing a TT. Towing my 12K fiver I consider 8 mpg good for a gas vehicle. My 2015 Ram diesel only got 11 mpg towing the same fiver. There is a lot of aerodynamic drag that must be overcome towing anything that looks like a box.
