Fueling Experience/Question

This is my first diesel and I have a fueling question. Yesterday we were returning from our camping weekend and decided we needed to stop for fuel. I pulled in a Speedway station. They had a few dedicated truck lanes so I went over to those. The price on the pump was the tax-exempt price. I inserted my Speedway loyalty card as well as my payment card. The price still stayed at the tax exempt price. I also topped off my DEF tank.

My question is should I have been in that lane? I thought the pump would have prompted me for a tax exempt number or something before giving me the fuel at that price. No one came out and questioned me.

Thanks.
  • Yeah, go inside first.

Went to a Pilot in Council Bluffs, Iowa recently and it immediately tried to charge me $500 on my card for fuel, thinking I was an OTR truck. Which locked my card out and I had to call my bank and straighten things up.

Some of these type stations have a lane marked just for pickup truck diesel filling, which should avoid some of those problems.
  • Thanks for the explanations. So if I go to another one of these type of setups, should I go inside and prepay first? I went to a Pilot when we first got the truck and went to the truck lanes since that was the only area where diesel was sold. When I inserted my payment card, it made me go inside and have the cashier swipe it. I asked why and they said it was the policy for the truck lane.
  • Yeah, I did it my first time stopping for diesel in Indiana also. Cashier asked for my DOT number ... whoops.
  • Sleep well tonight. But, yes you should have paid the tax inside. Indiana requires your dot number on the receipt.
  • Indiana does not put the taxes on the commercial truck pumps. It is not off road diesel, just no tax. They should have added the tax when you paid.
  • We have died fuel or tax exempt also but its only for off road use. There should have warnings on the pump that it was not for over the road use. I'd use that tank full to almost empty and change the fuel filters. The red dye will color your filter. To be honest though I've only seen one inspector with the dreaded dip stick into a tank. They make you pay the mileage multiplied by the tax savings from what I've read.
