Personally what I would really like to see happen in the HD diesel segment is improvements to the emission systems that are currently plaguing the reliability of these trucks as well as killing fuel mileage. Alternatives to DPFs and lowering the total cost of ownership of diesel engines would get my attention. A few more HP/TQ means nothing to me as I can easily get that and some with a tuner...
There is a lot that is currently being researched to get rid of the DPF. That's one of the big reasons for increasing the pressure to get that finer atomization and reduce the opportunity for particulate matter to conglomerate or form. I've also read up on Super-Critical fuel combustion, seems to have promise but there are lots of technical issues to overcome. The SCR system may stay as NOx is a bit tougher to control, but it is less instrusive to the tuning of the motor. I will be holding onto my truck until some sort of major advance comes to market.
