"Back in the day" its just the way things were! No seat belts, no air bags, people rode in the back of pick-up trucks and truck campers. Kids rode in the back of station wagons, seat belts weren't even invented yet! It's just the way it was. No one ever thought a thing about it.

It is interesting to watch some of the old vintage advertisements to see how much our times have changed.... some for good, some not so good!

I rode many a mile at highway speeds in the back of a pickup with a topper in my younger days. But now knowing the consequences of such in the event of an accident, especially a roll over, I would not do it again or ever allow anyone else to do it in my truck.

I remember my cousins riding in the cabover from Michigan to Tennessee but the truck was a Ford. I rode around town in it. Of course, we didn't usually use seat belts either at that time.

In the 90's I hauled my kids and dogs in the back of my 79 F150 pulling a pop up camper. I wouldn't hesitate to haul anyone in the back. Just as long as it wasn't too hot or cold.

I liked one of the questions asked in the comments. "How did four fit into the cab"?. The answer is, and I know some on here will freak out. But the fact is. The kids rode in the camper. A very common , and practical way to go on trips.

Heck , back in the day ,I had a bench seat from a Nova bolted in my truck bed, up against the rear window.. That's where my Guests would ride... No issues ...
