Grand Cherokee Oil Life Monitor

I have a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee that I have owned for just over a year. I have used full synthetic oil since I purchased it. The mileage to date is 21,000 since purchase. The oil life monitor has gone off every 2,500 miles in that time until the current oil change. I am now at 5,000 miles with no warning light. I run 5,000 mile intervals so it will be getting changed today. I am curious does anyone know if the computer "learns" the type of oil and extends the light cycle?
  • Just the latest idiot light...

I've never trusted any of them...usually they tell after it's too late to do anything about it
  • My daily driver (Honda Fit) has the countdown oil minder based on a percentage.
Seems to go about 7000 miles from 100% down to about 10%, but almost all my miles are highway, so I change it when it gets to about 50% (using Dino).
I still put the little piece of paper with the mileage and date of the oil change in the engine compartment (or on the window of the filter offers a sticker, which some now do:))

I try not to trust the gauges....as I found out, when I was sitting on the side of the road, showing about 1/3 of a tank of gas....calling AAA, only to realize that I'd driven about 450 miles, and had just run out of gas.:S Now, I reset the odometer and stop for gas when I get to 300 miles. The gas gauge does go back up to FULL when I fill up, and will drop as I drive, but seems to stop about 1/3 tank....so I don't trust them.
Oh, and Honda won't fix it (under warranty), because it's "working".....even if not correctly...LOL!!
  • On all of my vehicles, the computer will calculate oil life by taking into account the type of driving you are doing, engine load, etc. but I don't think it has the capability to determine synthetic v Dino oil. I usually get about 7k on my daily driver.
  • It does not know the type of oil. The oil life is determined by how the engine is used. Towing, temperature extremes, and hours are factors.
  • No probably what's happened to yours is like mine - It just quits working after a couple of years. Couldn't see spending the money to fix it either. Usually have a sticker on the windshield to remind me anyway.
