Happijac Question

I was sorting out my tie down system for my, new to me, TC today and I ran into something I'm not sure about.............

My camper came with 4 Happijac stainless turnbuckle style tie downs. 2 are spring loaded, and 2 just have a hard rubber bushing inside. Is one style better for the front and the other for the rear?

I had already taken the "hooks" out for cleaning and lubrication before I noticed there was a difference in the turnbuckles.

I'm not actually using a Happijac mounting system, just the tie downs......... but that's a story for another post.

Thanks KBob
  • One other thing, I would not get those turn-buckles too tight. IMO, a little snug is plenty. Trucks flex; too snug and you may damage something if you get in and ackward situation.

  • Perfect! Thanks!

That was my feeling, and the configuration I used for the trial. :B I did, however, have them on up side down. :S

Happijac turnbuckles are sold in sets of four including two long barrel turnbuckles and two shorter barrel turnbuckles. The longer barrels go on the front because they contain the linear compression spring. You want all four barrels facing down to allow rain to flow out of the barrel. If you’re using our Qwik-Load turnbuckle, it best to install them with the threaded hook up if possible. If it is not possible, then they can be installed in the reverse.

In place of the linear compression spring that is in the front turnbuckle, there are rubber bushings inside the rear turnbuckles. Having springs in all four turnbuckles promotes porpoising, a front to back rocking or hopping that happens when travelling at speed or on uneven and undulating highways.
  • My front happijacks (the short ones) are spring loaded and are anchored to the front of the truck bed. The rear jacks are longer and are anchored at the bumper.
