Hauling Kayaks / Scooter

Hopefully this topic hasn't gone stagnant.
I would LOVE to see various pictures of other peoples set-ups. Even pics of storage on roof tops, trailers, rear racks, etc.

Also, I found a place in Alberta Canada that looks promising. North Woods Trailers.

Towing behind a van or truck camper, a v-nose will not help much aerodynamically. I like having the tongue to add batteries, spare tire, generator, etc rather than that little extra room inside.

Aluminum chassis trailers are nice, but outside of my budget. Considering the tow vehicle being used, the weight savings may make it a desirable upgrade.

Tritons are nice, but top of the line and expensive. Back east you can buy a well built 6x 10/12/14’ vee nose cargo trailer for under 3 grand new. Unless you’re towing in a lot of salt/winter, the aluminum frame trailers aren’t much of an advantage imo.

a trailer is the best option.

My trailer is bigger so I can haul cars, dune buggies, motorcycles, paddle boats, bicycles, extra water and fuel, ...

I ran three lengths of e-track on the floor to be able haul various vehicles based on our current trip and I also have e-track running vertically up the walls to secure other things like outdoor furniture, fuel and water.

You could run two lengths of e-track down your floor for the bikes and scooter and two vertical runs up the walls to secure your kayaks. I use a motorcycle wheel chock for my large sport tourer but just use a three point tie down for scooters and bicycles.

I’d get a little single axle cargo trailer. Convienence, cleanliness and security of an enclosed trailer is nice.
Only downside is you have to tow it, but it’ll tow easy.
If not I’d buy, make one heavy duty hitch rack

If your kayaks are short you may be able to use a vertical hitch mount on the rear receiver. If your front axle has enough remaining capacity, you may be able to add a front receiver to carry a scooter or bicycles with warning that sight lines and head lights may be impaired.

I would also be one to suggest a toy trailer for your additional gear. Going with an enclosed model will be heavier than an open frame but will keep all your gear out of the weather and more secure than having everything in plain view. I suggest a model long enough to suspend the kayaks along the wall or from the ceiling. Width should match your camper van - This will allow you to see the trailer in your mirrors and will still be aerodynamic. For the type of items you are bringing, you can stay with a lighter single axle trailer rated at 3500 lbs but opt for axle brakes.

I bought a used utility trailer and added 1" square tubing to form the top rack. I called it my "camping trailer". I also extended the tongue to clear the kayak for gas station entrances and other situations that cause articulation between the tow vehicle and trailer.

The front storage area was a "hitch rack" I bolted on.

Get a trailer. 16ft would do it and you can carry lots of stuff and that sprinter will handle it. I bought a Wells Cargo from Maurice @ Don Randall Wells Cargo. No one better.
