HD Diesel Cost Comparison

It seems Ford and Chevy/GMC have always been a tick higher priced than Ram but that "tick" seems to be growing. Maybe it's that Ford and Chevy/GMC both just rolled out redesigns of 2017 and Ram didn't but wow is the gap getting big.

I know we all have our favorites but from what I see we're talking roughly 8K less for a Ram than a comparably equipped Ford or Chevy/GMC.

PLEASE...... Oval and Bow Tie fanboys in the "I wouldn't drive a Ram if it were free" hahahah camp..... save your breath. We all have a price and we all know what you like. Like I tell my 7 year old... let's try to focus ๐Ÿ™‚

To be fair I am currently in a Ram gasser and pretty much keep a finger in the wind as to prices. I'd for sure being going diesel if I were to change. I came out of a Duramax which was an amazing truck and had a Ford years ago and would gladly buy one again. I also have driven Toyota, Subaru and Nissan for extended periods so obviously I have zero brand loyalty.

My only loyalty may be a bit more cost savings with the Ram as I have some accessories that would swap to a new one which only further widens the cost gap for me.

From shopping Dennis Dillon Ram vs. GMC a 2500 4X4 Denali GMC is around 60K and a Laramie Ram can be had for around 52K. I haven't found a good source for bottom line Ford pricing (please share if you have one) but from my poking around it seems to be very close to Chevy/GMC.

In a nutshell I just find myself wondering is a Ford or Chevy/GMC 8K better of a truck? I know many would (and probably will) argue that for same money it's a better truck. That 8K is just a HUGE chunk of $$. Essentially, it's the difference between a gasser Ford/Chevy or a diesel Ram. I haven't actually shopped that but as I type this that thought is obviously crossing my mind.

The first pulled a pop-up.
The second pulled a Prowler Regal.
The third pulled our recently traded Arctic Fox.

None gave us a bit of trouble - but that's relative. Another guy could have bought the same trucks and beat the hell out of them (and claimed they didn't) and not serviced them (and claimed they did) and talked them down every chance they got.

Bottom line - all good trucks, all good experiences, all relative. Live and let live.

If I paid $3K more for my truck than another guy and I love it, I don't care about the $3K. Other people like to nitpick to make themselves seem bigger and others smaller.

Life is too short. We're all campers, and we all like trucks. WTF?

The real frustration if most of the routine bashers actually know a lot about trucks so there are some pearls of wisdom in all the ranting. Otherwise, one could just ignore the posts completely.

The value of the Ram definitely helped sway my purchase. My 2015 CTD powered 5500 with upfits and TTL was $60k OTD after rebates.

You didn't get that price out the door unless it was a totally stripped down truck.

Depends on your definition of "stripped down."

Check out Dennis Dillon's ram pricing online. Tradesman's aren't optioned out, but they are far from stripped down.

Tons of people have bought 2500 CTDs Tradesman's for 42k. That price is a big part of why I bought a Ram over the others.

If you want leather, heated and cooled seats, with every other bell and whistle that's a different story. If you want a nice truck with power windows, locks, keyless entry, 4wd, park sense, and a backup camera, you can buy a diesel ram for that price.

41.5k was my OTD price before TTL.

Here is a truck optioned similar to my 2016 I bought last year.

So please post the recall numbers for the rest of us, as we are falling behind your slanted opinion of RAM trucks.

Or maybe grow up and get past your campaign against RAM trucks!

I don't need to take a picture of the stack of recalls sitting on my desk for the Ford trucks we own. All manufactures have them.

BTW, my 2005 has never been in a shop of any kind to be worked on.

You're singing to the choir.... Ram has had the highest quantity of recalls last year and the largest financial penalty slapped on them in automotive history including buybacks.

Sure... All manufactures have safety recalls but ram takes it to the extreme level with one being a poor quality weld that holds the pan hard bar to the frame and the fix is to bolt on some silly bracket (Band-Aid)that bolts around the questionable weld.

That questionable weld was probably actually a handful of trucks but to only way to be safe is to recall enough to make sure they get them all checked out.

The latest one I have on our Ford F150'so is the possibility of the master cylinder to dump the brake fluid into the break booster. Yeah, having your steering break loose is bad but so is running out of brake fluid. ๐Ÿ˜‰

2011 RAM 65K tie rod recall and washer bottle recall, no biggie.

2015 RAM 33K now towing 33K combined zero issues with one safety recall I can do my self or take it to the dealer for some sort of security update.

So would I buy another? Heck yes and most likely a new 2019 LongHorn.

Oh yea I did my last oil change at 15K, did a Blackstone report with great results.

I'm pretty sure this discussion doesn't include pre emission diesels or I would have included our stellar 7.3PSD trucks.

I couldn't get anywhere close on the other trucks when pricing them last year. I actually preferred the Ram for some other minor reasons as well so the decision was easy for me. It was pretty easy to find a Ram Tradesman with the options I wanted and much more difficult/impossible to find an XLT with similar options, and the prices were way to far apart to justify. I personally only care about the more "utility" options rather than some of the creature comforts. The must haves for us were; Tow mirrors, anti-slip diff, back up camera with a good screen(not the 2x2 rear view mirror one), etc. My truck doesn't feel or look "bare bones" at all and I've been more than happy with it! A similarly priced Ford or Chevy would have been an absolute work truck with zero options and probably still cost a few thousand more.

You are right though from my shopping experience on pricing and it is a shame.

You say that, my 15 Big Horn Dually 4wd, I paid $48K out the door.
