I'm trying to help my friends find a TV....5th wheel which only around 11,000 lbs...I found a 2001 Dodge 2500 with the V10 engine.....50,000 miles.
If the 5er falls within the GCWR and GVWR of the truck then it will probably tow it fine. The V10 should have pretty decent power but as noted will be fairly thirsty for fuel.
That generation of Dodge had a few known issues with the transmissions. This should not be a deal breaker, rather just make sure the fluid is clean and the gear shifting is smooth and firm when you test drive the truck.
If your neighbor does get the truck I would suggest a complete fluid change as soon as they take possession. This truck is 16 years old and despite the low mileage can have contaminants and/or moisture in the fluids just from age. Towing 11,000lbs puts a strain on the vehicle and making sure all these fluids are up to snuff is good prevention against break downs.
1) Coolant
2) Engine oil
3) Transmission (plus filter)
4) Transfer case (if 4X4)
5) Axle differentials
6) Brake fluid flush
For example: my old '04 Chevy had a brake line rupture. They are known for this. :R I installed the new lines and flushed the system and immediately noticed a HUGE improvement in pedal feel and brake performance. Shame on me for not doing a brake flush sooner. It's really something that should be done on a regular basis but most people never do anything with the fluid. The improved braking really is amazing after flush and drives home the idea that it is a service that should be done.
