How does Ford 6.2 (gas) do at altitude

I am not trying to restart the diesel/gas debate. I have been hearing a lot of good things about this engine. I go to Colorado a lot, often up around Ouray (8000+ feet), and was wondering how the truck would do up in that thinner air, especially with a camper on board.
  • Gas engines of today are different with fuel injection compared to carbs of years past. I don't have one now, but the last one had no issues at altitude.
  • Did not notice any difference performance wise with my 6.2 in high altitudes. We went to Mesa Verde NP in Colorado. My rig tips the scales right around 10,400. We also saw temps at 119 plus going thru Needles, CA this past July and the coolant temp never rose above 215 degrees climbing hills.
  • My Chevy 6.0 pulls all the passes here in Colorado just fine with a 2,000 lb camper. I can easily maintain/exceed the speed limit on the I70 Eisenhower tunnel and Vail pass corridor. Your 6.2 will do just fine....these new gassers are great.
  • SeldomSeen has the Ford 6.2, lives in Flagstaff, AZ area @ 7500' elevation, and I believe really likes it. You could ask him for more detailed info.
  • Not a problem at all. I've taken my truck and camper combo (about 10,200 lbs combined) up several passes and mountains the most notable being Boulder Mountain in S. Utah (9,600 ft) and Mount Graham in E. Arizona (9,300 ft). No sweat hauling or braking up major inclines, plus I'm able to easily pass 18-wheelers up major interstate passes with no problems whatsoever.

Review of the 2011 Ford F-250
  • In some configurations Ford gives the engine a 15,000 lb trailer rating. Even with the power loss due to altitude I don't think it will have much trouble with a 5,000 lb camper. I certainly haven't had any problems in the mountains.
  • Here you go this article from a user might answer some of your questions. Don't even think about a 3/4 ton or 2500HD series.

Not sure if the camper on board means a truck camper or you are pulling a trailer. I have had our 6.0 gas GMC with our Bigfoot camper up in 9000 to 11000 feet altitudes with no problems. My camper may be smaller than your load.

I meant with a truck camper. I have been thinking in terms of an Artic Fox 811, Eagle Cap, or Lance 855S. That said, another thread indicated that you likely cannot take the camper off of the truck at sites in CA. Since that is where I planned to spend a lot of time, this is a big problem for me. It may make me think in terms of a pop-up and a lower center of gravity.

Probably do ok with the 410 rear axle. None to drive and try out. Only special order. Otherwise I would have one.
