I line up the jerry cans on the ground, fill them up one at a time and when done then shove the nozzle in the truck and let it fill while i put the cans away in the back of the truck. Easy Peasy

The reason I put the gas cans on the ground next to the pump is because I am sloppy and do not like the smell of gas.

The hose always drips from gas can to gas can and I would rather have the stink on the ground rather than in my truck bed.

At least it gave me an idea. I just came across many boxes of laminate flooring, all of it brand new and some of it is tropical hardwood. I think I'll build a few milkcrate sized boxes to store stuff in the truck bed. Since I'm using wood, it should be a "Green" thing to do. :)

Funny how this thread went from gas cans to death and destruction to milk crates to satiric enviromentology.

I don't know about any potential fire hazard when filling up a gas can while it's inside the pickup.

What I do know is, I never would fill the gas cans while they are in the truck because I wouldn't want the gasoline running lose in the rear of my pickup.

It's hard enough to make sure no gas spills out when I'm filling them sitting on the ground. If I just stuck the gas nozzle inside the pickup and pumped away, I'd be way more likely to accidentally spill the gas.

The gas would be contained in the rear of my pickup since the gas cans ride in one of those black, heavy plastic pans used to mix up a small batch of cement which are sold by Lowe's or Home Depot. But I still wouldn't want the liquid gas sloshing around in the pan, and I wouldn't want to have to sop it up either.

Who in their right mind would just happen to be RANDOMLY standing around with a video camera or even their phone and decide to STAND their and CALMLY video a big ball of fire?

Perhaps post LINKS TO REAL LIFE REPORTED IN THE PAPERS NEWS STORIES of such a fire caused by refilling a PLASTIC GAS CAN ON OR IN A VEHICLE..

Stupid people smoking cigarettes, cigars and E cigs while anywhere near a gas pump does not count either..

Do you not realize that todays modern vehicles ALL use PLASTIC fuel tanks?

Do you not realize that the filler neck on most modern vehicles ARE PLASTIC?

Do you not realize that many modern vehicles also employ "capless" systems WHICH ARE PLASTIC?

Like I said before, my metal 15 gallon tank IS "grounded" to the vehicle frame.. so it is the same potential as the vehicle..

It's not misinformation. The culprit is static electricity. A static charge can build up as gas is being pumped into the plastic can when it is not grounded. This can happen when the can is in the back of a truck with a plastic bedliner or in a trunk of a car while being filled. The safe thing which i always do is set the can on the pavement while filling. This disipates the static build up. All you need for a fire is the static spark like when you scoot your feet across the carpet and grab onto a door knob or touch someone's ear lobe. Most gas pump fires in winter are caused by women getting back inside their car after setting the pump nozzle. When it cuts off they slide back out of the seat building a static charge then discharge it when grabbing the nozzle to hang it up. I've seen signs on gas pumps stating to "TOUCH HERE BEFORE GRABBING NOZZLE".

And by the way. The videos I've seen have been gas station surveilance cameras. Both with men filling gas cans while standing or kneeling in the truck beds or women getting out of their cars and grabbing the pump nozzle.

I take it with that answer that you cannot offer any real authoritative proof from a Fire Marshal, major newspaper or news outlet of any NON SMOKING person putting fuel into a approved plastic gas container in the back of a vehicle caused mind blowing balls of fire.. Pretty much what you have is called "hearsay" in any online videos or third party a Cousin of a cousin of a brother inlaw heard from a friend of friend who overheard someone saying it happened type of news.

Have you ever considered the real reasons as to why gas stations post the instructions of not fueling portable gas containers in a vehicle?

1, make sure you ARE putting gas into a GAS CAN and not any old container like milk jugs which are not intended or designed for gas. Attendants can't see into a vehicle so they can't check to see what you are dispensing into. I have seen people use milk jugs when I am filling my vehicles..

2, spillage, easy to spill fuel inside the vehicle while filling, gas pumps can move a lot of fuel in short amount of time and folks often carry gas cans in trunks of vehicles.. Fuel spilled onto a trunk rug will vapor off and the correct ratio of air to vapor and you get a good possibility of an fire ball.

3, liabilities, gas stations don't wish to be liable for damage caused by clumsy attempts made when filling containers in vehicle..

It all come down to the amount of risk one wants to take. If you feel hauling and extra 5 gallons in you truck is a risk you probably do not sky dive, mountain climb, or ski the "Diamond" slope.

I am sure there is some way that the 5 gallon container could spontaneously combust but it is second to my concern of walking down the street and having an eagle drop an anvil on my head. Both are possible, neither is probable.

The solution is simple, if you do not like the idea, do not do it.
