I guess 80 mph is the new 65 mph

I just got back from a 7 day vacation in Myrtle Beach SC , I left Maryland and did the I 95 route . Now this trip we didnt take the trailer , ( not my choice ) Now I am running with traffic , adverage 70 to 75 mph . I was running the slow lane , I was constantly being passed like I was standing still. So just for something to do I kept count , I was passed by 47 travel trailers , and they were pulling away from me while I was running 75 mph . Both trailers and fifth wheels . These guys were moving , best part was this was in the rain , wet roads and spray . I guess 75 ++ is the new 65

since there is a section of I-95 where the limit is 70 mph, yes, there certainly are vehicles doing 5 over the limit in that stretch. but which exactly stretch are you talking about between 17 and the state line?

bumpy

Here is a observation of mine..

This forum seems to have a lot of folks with marginal equipment for towing.
Not to demean anyones choices and/circumstances, but think about how many posts we have from those with barely adequate TVs.. Those that never carry any water in order to make weight. Those who can't see getting a properly sized TV for the job, when they will only tow a few times a year.. So a nice daily driver is more important.. Or someone that won't consider a tire that can be safely operated at speeds above 65MPH..
I would suggest that some of these people are unsafe at speeds lower than 50-60 MPH... But then again maybe a lot of them are the ones dissing the higher speed drivers because their setups are so marginal, that they cannot imagine anyone having a better one... How often we hear from someone that finally got a dually... And now understands.. Often one doesn't know what one doesn't know.

Food for thought.

Don't know why if you tow at safe speeds (and are not towing a heavy fifth wheel) why one needs to consider an LT tire. There are a few quality ST tires out there that will hold up driven under the proper parameters.
Proper parameters...
Ok here ya go.

65 MPH is the MAX for an ST tire... Period. Every time you exceed 65, you are damaging the tire. This damage is cumulative. In other words, a failure won't happen immeadiatly. But it will at some point as the damage is hidden and adds up over time.

So you cannot exceed 65 when passing.. Period.
You cannot exceed 65 when going downhill.. Period.
You cannot exceed 65 when merging on the freeway.. Period.
Your TT transport driver cannot exceed 65 while delivering it to the dealer.. Period
You cannot exceed 65.... Ever.. Period.

If you are OK with those parameters... Go for it.

But those are YOUR parameters not mine. I expect more out of my equipment. I paid the money for it, and it is legal, so MY parameters are higher than yours... And I'm OK with that.

You must be blind Bumpy. I run south of 17 to FL all the time and 75 is average for everyone. Have seen them try to do it in the slush and snow. What a laugh. I'll bet I can count 15,000 cars tomorrow on 95 S doing 75 or higher between 17 and the state line.Like I said, I've driven 4 million miles and you drive yours, I'll drive mine. Virginia law says you can be ticketed for not moving over to the right if you are "not"passing and someone comes up behind you and it is legal for him to flash his lights signalling you he wants to pass.

Hmmmmm. Some valid points. Although we're not getting a dually because (a) we can't afford it and (b) we don't need it for our 26' TT. The 2 subjects I wish would go away and never return, although I read them. Tires and speed get the most contentious and borderline nasty. Friends.....don't post anything you wouldn't say standing in front of all the rest of us. You can make your point without being hostile. That's it for me tonight....my adult beverage and I, along with DH, are headed for the spa where it's nice and quiet. A lovely 78 degrees in West TN in August, who would have thought.

We share the road with people that are unsafe at any speed, regardless of the vehicle they are driving.

Thank goodness, the majority of drivers are either skillful or lucky.

So you think the proper response to impeding traffic, even with an impatient driver, is to DELIBERATELY AGGRAVATE other drivers?

At least we know some of the other drivers' rage is legitimate as others intentionally agitate them :R

It's really simple. If you aren't overtaking or don't want to drive faster, STAY RIGHT. Fortunately many states are passing laws to fine drivers deliberately impeding traffic and irritating other drivers by driving slowly in the passing lanes.

You are incorrect. If you are already in the right lane the next recommend step is to slow down to give the opportunity and encouragement for them to pass.

Which part is incorrect? Laws about staying right when not passing are clear. Irritating drivers, especially on purpose, is not wise and adds to the frustration and risks of travel.

You do mention something about already being in the right lane, but that wasn't what I posted about. If you don't want to drive at traffic speed, the right lane is the appropriate place to be.

When hauling heavy, that is where you'll find me much of the time, too ๐Ÿ˜‰

A few times since that first trip I have forgotten the trailer was back there coming out of the mountains. I'll be keeping up with traffic and look down to see how fast we are going and then fight off the urge to instantly slow us down. It's a short stretch but I've learned to pay attention. ๐Ÿ™‚

Oh, GOOD GRIEF, the dreaded tire thread. And this one that keeps popping up and some still trying to justify driving over tire and posted speed limits. Maybe we need a list that everyone is required to read word for word before they can join in, I'd rather discuss black tanks ad nauseum than tires and speed. They've both been talked to death and it appears that no one has had their opinion swayed. Be safe out there and happy camping!
