Insurance!

This has me hopping mad! I've been a USAA member for a LOT of years (40+) and always had my TT insured through them. Now they're out of the RV segment and have partnered with Progressive for that. Last year when I was finishing the build (and tallying receipts) I thought insurance would be a good idea. I called USAA who sent me to Progressive where I bought a policy for $162/yr.

We move from NY to IN last month and I get everything switched over with USAA, no problem. They remind me to call Progressive and do the same. After 20 mins on the phone getting the new policy written, they ask for the VIN. I tell them there is no VIN, only a serial number. This is not a vehicle, it's a camper. Uh-oh, please hold.

The Progressive guy comes back on the phone and says they can't write the policy since the camper has no VIN. Further, my NY policy currently in effect with Progressive is being cancelled immediately, because it was written by an independent agent, not a Progressive employee, and they made up numbers for the VIN to get the policy boarded. WHAT?? Oh, and you're not entitled to a refund.

So I call USAA back and let them know how well Progressive is treating their customers. I got a really nice guy on the phone who tells me that my camper is actually covered by my homeowners policy like any other personal property.

If you had $5000 worth of expensive furniture in your truck and you were in a crash and rolled the truck and ruined the furniture, the auto policy would cover damage to the truck and homeowner's would cover the loss of the furniture. Same with the camper, it's personal property like furniture, not a vehicle.

The main reason for wanting insurance is to cover it from storm damage while it's parked, not really concerned about collision.

Who do you guys use for insurance? Anyone have a similar experience with Progressive? Anyone get a similar story about being covered by homeowners?

I don't buy $50,000 campers, so never worried about it.
I would say "consult your insurance agent" but as above shows, you can't trust those guys and I had bad experience with agency in the past as well.

And don't consult Kayteg either. Camper is not just automatically covered like any other cargo on your auto policy.

Well.... it is in states where camper is a cargo.
Log years since I owned TT, but it was covered under my car policy as well.
Just read the fine print as cargo/trailer coverage comes with low limits.

Homeowner policy usually is the best if you can use it.
I did have tools stolen from my rental property storage.
The rental property policy would not cover it, but my homeowner policy paid for it.
Another thing lot of people don't realize - HO policy is the cheapest way to get $1 millions liability coverage - extending your auto policy.

You're absolutely correct about the Umbrella Liability policy. I added a 1M umbrella to my HO/Auto coverage and it's costing me about $72 per year (State Farm). No brainer.

My understanding is you need separate collision for the camper, it is not "personal property".
Tow vehicle protects for liability if camper causes damage while being towed, or comes loose.
Homeowner policy used for loss of furniture and personal liability on camper.
That's how it was explained to me by insurance agent.

Id' find Flo and Jamie and punch those BI$&*(_#*?TCHES in the nose!! LOL

Seriously whoever you talked to is either FOS or their "policy" changed in the last 2 years.
Had Progressive for several years on the TC. Until Progressive got greedy on our auto policies. Now have Am Fam.

FWIW, ALL insurance companies will screw you given the opportunity and anyone who thinks their beloved Jake from State Farm agent (that's a good old people's car insurance company...) is looking out for them is ignorant or delusional.
You basically have to keep your ins co honest and shop them out every so often. Takes them longer to get greedy if you don't have any claims and generally they only make their move when you make a change.

Ask the folks on the homeowners policy about adding some coverage, no matter how small specifically for the trailer since it may be damaged in a catastrophic even such as a flood or storm. Having your amount of personal property coverage raised will give you a much stronger position IF there were ever a claim against the homeowners policy.

I'd be more upset with the insurance agent who falsified information in the first place.

In theory, you have a claim against them but probably not worth the hassle.

If they are calling the truck personal property, can you buy a personal property policy. Did that for the DW's wedding ring. I would make sure to send an email and confirm exactly what the expectations are to the agent and save a copy. That way if they misrepresented the policy, you can point to the email where you confirmed the assumptions...if they don't come back and correct you, it's on them. Of course, they may come back and tell you, you got it wrong but then you have the opportunity to find a solution.

I had progressive for a few years in NC, whe never made a claim, but they kept raising the prices so I moved on. I had a big policy with multiple vehicles and the RV, but going up $1,000 in a year had me cancelling. Progressive had teaser rates and then it kept increasing. I had ATV's insured too, lots of profit for them with zero claims.

So far I like SafeCo insurance best even after a couple claims. The claim process on the house and a car was good, no issues. I've had bad experiences with Allstate when I was living in GA. Alfa here in Alabama had horrible claims adjusters. Mine got fired and they ended up fixing the house after a year of jumping through hoops with some district manage. Had to get a structural engineer. They would not go off the estimates of the contractors. We ended up getting more money after the engineer's report that said the same thing as the estimates and then some, so it worked out in our favor.

Allstate was just horrible all around, my family had auto claims and every-time it was a fight to get things fixed correctly even at Allstate Certified body shops. I really hate Allsnake, they short changed us on a water heater failure in the house, they never did cover all the damage. Ended up just fixing it out of pocket, already dealt with the state insurance commissioner and he wasn't much help. The lawyers are the true winners.

SafeCo so far has been good even after a big tornado damage claim the rates haven't gone up that much, nothing like Progressive. SafeCo covers everything of ours now. They are good with motorcycle too. We got hit with two bad storms and Safeco covered it, the house and car got damaged. Never had an RV related claim, hopefully we will keep it that way!
