inverter size

Hey all, I just bought a 2013 heartland wilderness travel trailer. How can I tell what size the inverter is. I want to dry camp and want to know what size it is for generator/charging purposes. Thanks.
  • You may be confusing an Inverter (12V DC to 110v AC) with your Converter (110v AC to 12 v DC). Do you have the model number for the converter?
  • we dry camp mostly
there are lots of possibilities in Oregon.
the only 120 volt we use is a 400 watt inverter we purchased at costco .
we use it to recharge electric razors , cell phones , Nook reader and so forth .
we leave the tv home when dry camping.
we do not have solar and we do not use a generator.
we camp with other friends and we prefer quiet camping so no generators allowed.
we park our trailer and turn our duramax around so that we can use our HEAVY DUTY 12 foot jumper cables to connect the 2 batteries in the duramax (exide EDGE AGM ) to the 2 RV batteries on the trailer .
we stay hooked up with all 4 batteries all the time .
the duramax gets driven every second day and when we return we immediately hook up the jumpers to the rv batteries .
we never run the pickup just to recharge the rv batteries .
we have an annual 9 day campout in the boonies with friends and have never needed a generator . we have been using this method since 1995.
we do not use the furnace when dry camping. it eats batteries .
instead we use our propane lantern at night to take the chill off before going to bed.
we also have a mr. buddy propane heater but rarely use it .
we spend more time outside than in .
we cook on our coleman stove and propane grill .
we use the costco LED headlamps which run on AAA batteries .
camping without hookups allows us to stay in the most beautiful spots in Oregon .
we only camp in commercial rv parks when we are between destinations for the most part.
we have however spent 3 months total at outdoor resorts in cathedral city during winter months.
dry camping or forest service or blm caqmping is the absolute best camping we do .
you may notice that the rv companies always picture their vehicles in a grassy meadow , not in an rv park .
make checklists , go camping , keep notes , you are in for a good time .

Most CONVERTER/CHARGER units are mounted in the kitchen area possibly under the stove oven next to the floor. This will be the unit where all of the 120VAC circuit breakers and 12VDC fuses are located. the Converter unit is usually installed in the bottom compartment here.
    Might look something like this

Push the door to open and you will see the model number of the INVERTER on the inside.

Also you should have received a big folder of all of the appliances provided with your new trailer. Look for the install brochure of the CONVERTER/CHARGER unit in the folder.

Let us know what the manufacturer and model number is for your installed converter. It is most likely a 55 amp model and being a 2013 model it should also be a smart mode charging technology unit.

You will most likely need at least a 2KW Honda type small generator to plug your trailer shore power cable into it using a RV30A-15A adapter cord to operate the 55AMP Converter to re-charge your battery when needed.

    just my thoughts

  • That's a 55 amp converter. It converts 120V into 12V at up to 55 amps and charges the batteries.
  • And it'll need 950 watts of AC power at full output. So you're looking at something bigger than a 1000 watt generator, more like a Honda 2000i at a minimum.
  • What about charging them with my chevy gasser truck? It's quieter than my 3500 watt champion genny. I am going to use 2 6v golf cart batts also.
  • It isn't very efficient to use a 300+ horse power engine to charge batteries at a trickle. You will do much better to plug the trailer in and let the converter charge your batteries. The converter will charge much faster also.
