Is it safe to use normal garden hose for water??

Years ago, the black inner layer of your green garden hose was a pvc compound stabilized with heavy metals including lead. The major hose makers no longer use lead in any hose, but if you buy the white drinking water hose you know what you're getting.
On a hot day, the cheap green hose will transfer an odor or a taste to the water. It may be safer nowadays (no lead) but it doesn't taste great.

I was wondering if anyone was going to make that point and am glad you did. I too drank from a garden hose (that was not new either) and also directly from the spigot. Water tasted okay and I am not dead yet. Even as a middle aged adult I still have a quick drink from the hose if I am outside working on a hot day.

To the OP -- if the hose is new and is not mixed up with a hose you use for other stuff then it is fine.

I say this because I have a standard garden hose I use for the long run to my sewer cleanout whenever my RV is home. That I would not drink from. ;)

I wonder if our dogs taste the difference?

You are sanitizing it, not drinking it( not that it would hurt you). Use the hose you have. Your going to drain ity out and flush it anyway.

I have been drinking well water for 38 years. The camper fresh water tank needs more ice.

On the short haul for sanitizing right now, I would just go ahead and use the regular hose - let it run for a bit before filling the FW tank just to rinse out anything nasty. But for regular use at the CG, invest in white hoses. We have 2, but rarely need more than just 1. If you start your Christmas Wish List for camper things now, I'd include a GOOD fresh water white hose. One of ours is the cheapie Walmart one and it kinks at the drop of a hat. Perfectly usable, but annoying.

even though i would be fine using a garden hose, i use the white water hose since they are cheap and i need them anyway.
we DO drink water from our FW tank, since we haven't been brainwashed into thinking that bottled water is necessary.:S
but i used iodine tablets to purify water when i backpacked in the Sierras. so, i think tap water tastes great.

i always say that my grandparents would be shocked to know how many people pay for water, when it virtually free from your tap.

I use 75 feet of NSF white hose. I blast bleach through it into the city line with air. More bleach into the hose and water to the fresh water tank. Cycle the pump and let it sit for 6 hours. Followed up with 6 full fw nsff. ,A
