The gasser may have more GVWR based payload but gaz or diezul pickups have about the same empty rear axle weight = about the same payload in the bed.

That's because yours is a gas and his is a diesel. The diesel engine weighs a lot more, hence the payload goes down because the curb weight goes up; the GVWR remains the same.

This may not be entirely true. My 13' 2500 duramax has the 10,000 payload, my buddies '14 GMC 2500 gasser has a 9,500 payload. So it's closer than the weight of the engine. Dan

Neither one of your trucks has anywhere close to a 9,000 lbs. payload rating. Read the definition of "payload rating". While you're at it you may want to look up the definition of GVWR and curb weight. Then have that discussion about what's "entirely true" or not. You're comparing apples to grapes.

Makes me wonder why anyone asks these questions, they are only looking for support in whatever they decide to do. The numbers are the numbers, they don't change if people decide not to follow them or because of anything that is said here. People are going to do what they are going to do.

Huge 5th wheels behind 250/2500's are VERY VERY common. Most are not dragging in with steam blowing from under the hood.

My point is research your local laws and rules, read threads like this, and make the best decision for you.

Best comment I've seen on a rv website.
Also find out how your state interprets and enforces said regulation.

I also would add research the truck makers websites for actual mechanical specs of a 3/4 vs one ton SRW truck in a particular year model.

With all the manufacturers tech info and advice available I'm surprised at some of the uneducated comments made on this subject.

Probably one of the more important things in all of this, and one of the reasons I have a somewhat cavalier attitude about the topic, is my state does not have any enforcement on a private party level. To be honest, I didn't know any states do but some of the chatter I've heard makes me think some do. I'm much more just looking at the physics - A 2500 is the same truck as a 3500 except for some rear suspension beef. Add the beef and you're good to go from a physical standpoint (this is why I get annoyed at people saying I'm risking my safety and everyone on the road).

My point is research your local laws and rules, read threads like this, and make the best decision for you.

What kind of actual capability do you want to know, the point where it breaks? Of course that will change with age and use. The capability is what the manufacturer says it is, he sets the margin between max load and failure. After that you are on your own.
