Length of the rear tubes on Happijac Turnbuckles?

Given the amount of work I'm putting into restoring the Amerigo, I'm planning to replace the old chain and turnbuckle (Or just giant turnbuckle, as what came with it) with some actual spring loads, and probably with the quick loads.

My one concern is I can't remember if the rear turn tubes are longer than the front ones by a substantial amount.

Because of the design I had made for the rear jack mounts, the tie down ears are lower down:

Why do I have that plate? Because the original under wing brackets are behind them and are being used as part of the jack attachment to help take some of the twisting load so that its carried by more than just the 2x2 corner post.

The tie down hole will be in the bottom corner towards the front of the truck, pulling through the face plate and the bracket that bolts through the underside of the wing as well (I like things built like a brick house ;), that and this camper is a heavy bugger).

Anyway, usually happijac rears as I recall have a longer threaded rod, for going from the underside of the wing all the way down to the bumper, as I've shown, it'll be a bit shorter of a run.

Shortening the threaded rod isn't a problem, my main concern is, is the tube going to be too long?

I really almost need four the front ones. But they come in a set of four, two front, two rears.

Any insight from those that already have them would be greatly appreciated :).
  • If they're too long, you can cut some length off the threaded end of the threaded rod/hook.

Thanks Tiger, in this case its the reverse, wanted to make sure they weren't too long, because of my lower attachment points on the camper. ;)
  • When I was figuring out my turnbuckles system for my flatbed I needed 4 short turnbuckles . Torklift also makes a version of the Happijac called Anchor Guard . They were willing to sell me a set of 4 short front spring loaded turnbuckles. BTW , Torklift stated these were only to be used with body mounting , not frame mounting . I'm not sure what Happijac says .On the regular set from Torklift the cylinder length is longer on the fronts .

  • Here's an article about the Happijac tie-downs. Has great info on the difference between the front and back turnbuckles

  • My happijac turnbuckles are all 4 the same length, for the tube part. The rears have longer threaded rods than the fronts.
  • I still have my set of 4 from my F 150 days. All 4 tubes are the same length, about 9". The threaded rods are two at 12" and two at 24". Hope this helps.
