Depends on what make, some short beds are too short (5.5 feet). The 6.5 foot bed works out great, and no need for a longer bed unless you're carrying your whole world with you.
Some short bed are too short 5.5' ? Too short for who ,the ones that bought them. IMO there are no short bed trucks TOO short, depends on your needs .
I think the 5'6" beds are in half tons only.
The newer fivers also have rounded front caps that virtually eliminates the chances of the trailer striking the cab of the truck except in extreme turns which one should avoid anyway due to the strain on the trailer tires and suspension.
I have a slider hitch and haven't even come close to needing to use it since we upgraded our fiver over 2 years ago.
I would rather have a long bed and a less rounded nose so I have more storage space!
We have an 8' wide closet with a 18" deep FLAT floor full width, much better than the current rounded nose chopped up closets.
Our trailer has a large front closet as well as a closet for a washer/dryer combo. 2008 Corsair brochure. Our model is on page 13. There is also plenty of other storage within the rest of the trailer.
One thing that you need to remember is that your truck is much shorter with the extended cab and 8' box than the new crew cab/mega cab trucks. My last truck was a F-350 Supercab with 8' box that was just slightly shorter than my current truck. The Supercab was getting much too small for our family and we needed a truck with a bigger cab.
