Mojave Road Trip Planning

I am planning a trip out to Mojave National Preserve and was wondering how my long bed truck with 8' wide camper would do on the Mojave Road. I know several others have done the entire Mojave Road but I don't think any of the rigs are as large as my setup. I have read all the amazing trip reports posted here and it apprears to be do able. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks
Nolan

The hardest part of the trail is going through the Joshua Forest, that's where you'll have highest chances of damage to your camper and breaking of Joshua tree limbs. If you're able to accept any damage that occurs to your rig then go for it, the least you'll get is desert pin stripping on your rig.Your rig is higher and wider than our Lance's when the "Bros" went and it got mighty tight in spots. The photos we posted weren't angled to make it look tighter than what is was, it was that tight. It's up to you.
  • Lots of places with deep sand or, mud if a recent rain. One spot has Joshua Trees pretty tight along the road. A majority of the route is in the Mojave River Wash on the west end. In the preserve itself, they have closed the original route, and bumped you out to utility right of ways. But it is still fun to do.
  • I've done Mojave road with my superduty (srw, 4 wheel drive) and a basic fiberglass camper shell about 5 times, and maybe 5 more in my jeep.

I would not try it with anything more than that. There are places where its narrow, off camber, deep sand, twisty and articulated. In fact, it can be so bad I ended up installing air lockers in my truck for next trip.

If you've never done it before, try it without the camper first.
