i know there is/was several guys on this forum with f450/550 trucks wondering how you carry your spare tire..mike mck in your pics I see you have your spare under the truck..

I had my spare tire mounted on the passenger side of the frame. Right behind the back seat. I assume you will have a flatbed? There is 32 inches from the side of the frame to the outside edge of the cab. The tire fits perfect. I put the tire there on my Dodge 4500 a well. I cut out the back of my aluminum boxes. To make to look right. But the tire is resting on a steel cradle.

I had a front tire carrier on my F550. I installed a front hitch and then had a tire carrier built for it. It worked great but thankfully I never had a flat to force me to take the spare down because those buggers are heavy. When I pulled my 5ers with the truck before the front mount and camper I lifted the spare into the bed of the truck. I couldn't put mine under the truck as I had a pickup bed and the optional fuel tank on it also. It carried right at 60 gallons of fuel.It never affected the cooling on the truck. These truck have so much cooling in them that it won't affect it.

Don't carry one, still. I carry spares on every trailer, even two spares for some, but after a couple of decades of dual's, both work and pleasure, none of them carry spares. I can think of two flats, and both came off construction site damage. It's a good consideration, especially if you are seriously boon docking. To me, that would be alone, out of phone service and farther and in conditions that I wouldn't be comfortable driving with a single and farther than I could get out and back in a day for a change out. I think of it a few different ways. At work, there are options that are much more economical that carrying a spare around, losing the space, etc. On pleasure, am I really in that big a hurry? Even if I lost one out in the back-forty somewhere, worse case is; drop the camper, take the flat off, and drive to town.Choices..

Mine is in the standard location under bed since I have a normal pickup bed. The mechanism is available if you wanted to do something similar to add the winch to yours and not expensive.

I'm with Butch50 the diffence between a 16" tire and wheel and a 19.5 tire and wheel is significant I used to toss my spare 265/75/16 on a steel d-hole wheel in the bed of my old truck one handed the 19.5's on my 550 take two to set on the back of it..

When I decided to store it up there I practiced the solo on/off routine first. Using a rope it was able to be lowered and raised quite easily following the ladder. I'm a big guy, lugging a 90 pound aftermarket tire/wheel assembly was easy. The only two times I had a flat I had my even stronger Son with me. Your mileage may vary... :)

You are taking a little difference in weight from a F250 to a F450 19.5. These tires and wheels run in the 125 to 135# range where a normal 16 to 18 run around 80# n weight. Then when you need it and you are by yourself with no help how would you get it down. I know people in the past have said drop it over the side. I know from experience that even when I rolled the tire out of my truck and let it drop it bounced just like a basketball but the difference is I was standing on the ground right next to it so I could control some of the bounce and direction it was going. I know I sure wouldn't want to try and horse a 19.5 unto the roof of a camper. I was bad enough to put the spare in the bed. Luckly I was raised on a ranch and was use to bucking bales of hay so I knew to start the lift and then use the a leg to help lift it into the truck.

I carried my spare on the roof of the camper for two decades with no issues. My old F-250 has an aftermarket Transfer Flow fuel tank under the bed. I used a rope for the two times I needed to use it, both times I was lucky enough to have had a passenger.

wondered what they did for the fuel tank on your truck because when I was going to shorten mine the crossmemebers all ended up in the wrong spots for a premade tank..your right about 19.5 being a heavy sob is why i would like to get aluminum wheels. how's the spare held up? they use a winch like has been suggested..seems easiest way..

It's a factory set up for spare. winch using jack components to lower on a cable. Only time I lowered it was while installing the super hitch. Discovered who ever installed the tire carrier put a bolt in backwards. left about a 1/2 in impression in the spare side wall. I was changing from 225's to 245's and my sons shop had a bunch of used 245's to use as spares. Turned the bolt around.
Tank runs inside the drivers side frame rail. It sits real close to the Driveshaft. The 50 gallon tank capacity exceeds my bladder capacity so is a good size.

I had the Alcoa's on my F550 and they still weigh a bunch. The 19.5 that I had on my F350 SRW were Visions and they were very heavy also. Shipped weight on the pallet was over 500# for 4 of them.

I can see if you had an aftermarket fuel tank added and removed the 40 gallon stock then you would have a place for the 19.5 under the rear. It is still going to be a bear to get it under the truck. It might be easier to place the spare on the ground and then back up over it till you are in the right spot and then hook the winch to it and raise it. Laying on the ground and trying to move the tire on the ground is hard even with the 17" tires on my Ram.

You make some good points. Even though I carried a spare I also carry a tire plug kit and an air compressor. So for most of the time I could repair and inflate in the field unless I have cut a sidewall.

Cutting a sidewall or a total blowout from driving with a nail or something that released most of the air, then blows out can not be repaired.

You can still remove one of the rear duals, and install it anyplace you need it. If towing, you can still get the truck to a safe place, and then unhook until you get the tire repaired. LT tires can drive over their rated loads at a slow speed, say under 15 MPH.
