New propane tanks

Has anyone out there tried the Viking propane tanks. Have been reading about them but cant find anyone who have used them. Sounds to good to be true. Anyone with info
  • Try to find a dealer within a 1000 miles of where you are. I couldn't. Only buy option was online. I thought it was a nice option to cut about 50# off my payload (replace 2 steel 30# with 2 viking 17#). I almost always full hookup camp and running the furnace is so rare for me.
  • West Marine is a dealer, they have locations all over the USA. Here is a link to other dealers.

BTW, I like the idea, I will try them after I get another RV.
  • Looks like a great idea and I like the weight reduction, but at over a hundred bucks a tank (Amazon), they're too pricey for me to run out and replace two good tanks that I have. When the price gets around $50 per tank, I may give it some consideration, especially if I need to replace tanks due to the age of the tanks I have.

My regular 30 pound steel tank needs to be re certified or replaced. $70.00 empty at TSC
  • I think there is more than one company that makes them. Lite made them a few years ago and had a recall issue . Im not sure about Viking but it appears to be the same type of tank.
They are expensive and not popular because the weight is in the propane more than the tank itself. If I remember correctly the base weight difference empty was minimal.
The advantage is being able to see the gas level. In a single tank set up I can see the advantage but in a dual tank set with a change-over regulator, it has lass impact as well as bang for the buck.
  • there was another mfg of these and there was a recall and I thought a few people got there money back then the company went belly up and left everyone else screwed.
I would question how long they have been made but it would be nice.
  • I just ordered the 11 pounder to replace my aging 5 pounder steel. I will let anyone know what issues, if any, that I have.
  • I haven't had the Viking but I did have a couple of the Lite. They are the same material (fiberglass) but not the same construction. The Lite got recalled then the folks skipped town, very tawdry affair. The Lite cylinders I had were great, had them on a boat and they do not corrode like all others, nor do they bang up the paintwork when you are wrestling them into the dinghy.

I don't see much advantage in a camper though.
