Recently purchased a 2006 27' Salem LE. I'm new to the camping world so I'd like some help on what 'things' I need to purchase before my first camping trip. Ive purchased a water regulator but that's about it. I know that i need a hose and wheel chock and levels. What are other things that are essential that i get before i take off on our first trip?

Potable water hose, sewer dump hose are the top two. From there on a pressure treat 2X6 cut into about 14 inch lengths to use as leveleling blocks. A good bubble level to level with. Pots pans, dishes etc for cooking and eating. Bedding. A series of electrical adapters for 15 to probably 30 amp maybe a real heavy duty extension cord. From there youll figure it out as you go.Personally since we use a lot of NF camp grounds we carry about 250 feet of water hose and a blue tote to dump the gray water. Plus a generator to suppliment my solar panels when necessary.

I would get a filter for your water that you put in your trailer when you are not at home. Make sure all of your appliances work properly. I always carry a barbque lighter for the stove and other old appliances. Check your LP hoses before you go out. Make sure you have the proper length stinky slinky. If you are going to use chemicals in the black water tank, make sure you have them. Check your spare tire and have a good jack and some tools. Always carry a couple of quality flashlights. Put grease on your ball before towing and get a rubber slip on cover for the ball so you don't get greasy when walking by it. Check your batteries for their condition.

Some things on my must have list. Some basic tools like lug wrench, hot water heater drain plug wrench (or socket), phillips and flat screwdriver, zip ties, black tape, small bottle jack for changing tires if needed (spare tire), a small bottle of bleach (in case of funky water), tire pressure guage, blocking for leveling under tires and stabilizer jacks, 5gal water jug, flashlight, weather radio, black tank treatment, flyswatter. Be sure to check all your systems and maybe even camp in your driveway for a night or two to get the feel of things.

We carry a smaller white water hose, extra slinky hoses and a longer electrical hookup cord in the event we need to reach far away connections (which has occurred on occasion)Also buy some rubber gloves and hand sanitizer for dealing with the slinky and dumping. We carry a tool box with the basics, plus extra fuses, etc. Take flashlights in the event of power outages or trips in the dark. I like the blue LED multi-lights that Harbor Freight sells cheap.TAKE A WEATHER RADIO. We keep one handy for updates on bad weather heading our way.Basic first aid kit, games, cards, are essentials.Good luck and have fun, its hard not to!

A trailer to haul all your junk in and at least 40 ft of water hose and extra sewer hose and 1 end needs to be an elbow that screws in as some campgrounds with well water will require it. We were in Key West and the water, sewer and Elecric were all at the front of our 33 ft long TT. Suprise!

Think about the things you must use on a daily basis and put one of each in the camper...things like pillows, shampoo, soaps, toothpaste and toothbrushes, contact case and solution...all things that are easily forgotten...

When at a CG with full hookups do NOT leave your black or gray valves open.

Leave valves closed until you need to dump. First black and then gray.
If you leave them open you will end up with a mountain of poop in your black tank as it can not slide out on its own it needs water, lots of water which is why you leave it closed. So it all has a nice ride out on all the water right down to the bottom of the tank! :B

I forgot to mention to check your CO/LP monitor and your smoke detector, along with your fire extinguisher.

The other difficult part is not taking everything that you have in your house. Take the minimal amount that you will actually need. Remember, weight is your enemy.

If you have actual greyhounds, a collapsible Remington kennel is handy to have, along with those big cushy pillows that they love so much. If you need to go into town for groceries then the hound will be more secure, and also your trailer won't get trashed if the pup gets spooked.

If "Greyhound101" means you drive a bus, well then never mind!

FYI: For those non-dog people out there, greyhounds are uber-quiet so there won't be barking from the trailer while they're out.

Make sure you have a AAA Membership that covers your trailer when you tow it !

After you've exhausted the list of suggestion, hit the road. There's WalMarts all along the way to buy more stuff you need.

By the way, WalMart has an excellent RV section for essentials. Use ONLY RV TP, not "store bought" TP. Makes a big difference when you dump your black water.

On that subject, when you are dumping your gray and black water at either your campsite or at a dump station, dump the black first and then the gray second. The soapy gray stuff cleans your sewer hose of the yucky black stuff.
