New Tow Rig Ordered!

I've been on the fence about buying a new Super Duty for at least two years now, and with more and more rumors swirling that they are closing the order banks for the 2016's on August 31st to gear up for the new 2017 model, I figured it was now or never. I already put down a $500 deposit and they drafted up the purchase order, but they are going to wait until Monday to submit it since I'm still debating on a couple of the options, which is where I'm hoping to get some input from you all.

The truck is going to be a F-350 Lariat crew cab, short box, 4x4, 6.7 Powerstroke in Magnetic. Below are the options I currently have on the build:

  • Camper Package
  • FX4 Off Road Package
  • Lariat Interior Package
  • Tailgate Step*
  • Wheel Well Liners*
  • 5th Wheel Hitch Prep*
  • Engine Block Heater
  • Transmission PTO Provision*
  • Dual Alternators
  • All-Weather Floor Mats
  • Heated Rear Seats
  • Rapid Heat Supplemental Cab Heater
  • Navigation*
  • Universal Garage Door Opener
  • Upfitter Switches

The items with an asterisk (*) after them are the options I'm still on the fence about. I avoided the Lariat Ultimate Package that includes the moon roof because I'm worried about busting the glass throwing bikes and kayaks on the roof. I still hope I'm not sorry later that I didn't just go with the Ultimate Package though. Obviously the most likely option to toss is the PTO provision, but I was curious what you all thought. The 5th Wheel Prep I thought was a good idea for future proofing the truck. Still debating on the nav; it's a $900 option unless I spring for the Ultimate package, where it's included with the moon roof. I like the idea of wheel well liners, but was wondering if these are just a gimmick.

Last but not least, I think I negotiated a decent deal, but I wanted to get all of your input. MSRP for the truck is $65,715; I got them down to $59,377, which includes the current $1,000 rebate. If the rebates improve before I take delivery, I'll get to reduce the price accordingly. Only other charges I have to pay are license and registration of $373 and no sales tax (thanks Oregon!) or dealer processing fee BS.

I walked in wanting to just take a short bed crew cab for a test drive to my house to see if it'll fit my garage (it does, barely) and ended up walking out with a new truck order. I can't wait to take delivery, but I'll definitely miss my old 7.3, and not sure how quick I'll be turning it loose. It will at least stick around until after I take delivery of the new truck so I have something to pull my camping trailer in the interim. Below are a couple pics of the test fit:

I'm just hoping this is enough truck for my trailer. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Sorry but with 180k miles on my 6.0L I love it.

I should add I was only looking at 6.7L PSD's 2011 - present, XLT trim and up in 4x4 with crew cab.

10 speed in the Super Duty???

Ford and GM have been sharing development of 10sp trannys for a few years.

I have not seen anything about Ford discontinuing the normally aspirated 6.2L in favor of a 5.0L EB. Not that that wouldn't be great but ................

I can see me keeping my '06 for a while yet. No way I can afford a mortgage payment to buy one of these trucks new. Guess I'll wait for a few years for a slightly used off lease, gently used unit for half the price :B

Good luck with that from what I found all the gently used trucks that were a few years old with low miles were discounted $5-7k off new. Add 10 years and 120k plus miles and you could save $15k, but that wasn't worth it to me. I just bought new instead. Keep the goodies reasonable and you can get a pretty good price on a new diesel from avidly me dealer.

I found the same thing when looking for trucks last year, there just wasn't enough spread between new and used on the trucks.

Well I had to look............and in my neck of the woods here in Ontario that is not the case. With a little effort I could easily find decently loaded trucks with around 60000 miles/120000kms on the clock going for less than half what they would have walked out of the dealership for, never mind what I could peel off a dealer with a little work. Add a Ford ESP onto that and Bob's your uncle. Me I'm not afraid of that mileage, it's a diesel and most if not all decently loaded diesels around here the "Boss" drives or it's even used as a grocery getter for the well heeled.

but hey, what ever you have to tell DW to get what you want :B

We were looking as far away as 500 miles and could not find a 1 or 2 year old truck for less than anything other than just a slight discount from what our local dealer was offering for new trucks.
This was in September and they had both 2014 and 2015 new trucks on the lot and there was no price break for getting a 2014 over the 2015 that had the improved engine and transmission and the exhaust brake.

10 speed in the Super Duty??? Any link to what they are considering? I've heard the 6.2 gas engine is on its way out the door. I would assume a 10 speed transmission would be hooked to a new engine... Ecoboost 5 liter anyone???

This is a serious question. Why order a 2016 when they are doing a completely new truck from the ground up next year? The fact is the truck is the same platform since 1999 and the changes should be great with the new truck.

It's not a new "ground up" truck next year, but supposed to be lots of changes. Aluminum body, new look, 10 speed transmission (likely), but the engine will be the same. Hopefully they improve the brakes.

The FX4 package did in the older years(mine) add steering dampening and an upgraded power steering unit. Not sure on the newer trucks but steering dampening is REALLY worth it on these big trucks!

You buy what fits in your garage. I understand that and did the same. I don't haul people around but I needed an 8ft bed, thus my SC.

The only thing on your advice list that I have is the tailgate step. Had it on the 08 and knew I had to have it when I got the 13.

    Good luck.

I like the B&W hitch and 5th wheel hitch I installed in my truck better than the factory plug and 5th wheel prep package.
I like the Nav with the back up camera but wouldn't be surprised to find out the aftermarket systems are better.
2 way after market car starters are much superior to the factory one.
The moon roof is kind of cool but I would have a hard time borrowing money to order it. I often have mine closed off and never drive with the glass open.
The only thing I see value in with the FX4 package is the pretty decals
I have never missed my long box
tail gate step is very handy
I bought my 2011 in the fall of 2010 for $11k off MSRP but had to travel a long way to get it.
