Newbie, probably a stupid question

I just ordered a new TT. During my search, I had looked at a used trailer and the owner indicated the toilet was only used for liquid waste if you know what I mean. He suggested not using it for more then that because of permanent odors that will develop and hygiene etc.

Is that credible? One of the attractions for my wife and I having a TT is not having to use the public restroom.

About the only difference between a household toilet and the RV toilet is the household's water level stays constant, the RV toilet is a closed bowl (until flushed), so the more you put in, the higher the level.

Hi 2oldman,

I am in the same boat as that lady. Many small towns do not have the equipment to fill a "fixed" tank.

I find it interesting when TT owners tell me that they don't use their toilet for no. 2, and go to the bath house instead. That's one of the primary reasons I camp in an RV, so I can use the bathroom in my unit.

Nonsense, old urine smells as bad as old feces.

A correctly operating system can handle all waste although that owner isn't alone in his thinking.

I use mine for both. That's why I bought it. Just do as everyone has said , use the right toilet paper and plenty of water. I don't use chemicals but, some do it's up to you.

Use lots of water. I do use public facilities when they are clean. That is about water and waste management. i.e. extending the time I can boondock.

Ahhh, the dreaded #1 vs #2 discussion.... The systems are designed to be used for both. A good black tank treatment or the Geo Method (do a search and read forever) + PLENTY of water and you should have no problems. Someone having an odor problem is a rarity and usually ends up with a lack of sufficient water. And, before you ask, TP is definitely ok. Suggest you not invest in the pricey "RV TP" but just a regular single ply whatever brand is fine. You can test by taking a sheet or two, put in a jar, add plenty of water, give it a good shake and the paper should start to come apart. You'll be good.

Back in the day.....about all that was available was the "blue stuff". We used it in our boat and actually made the boat smell just like the blue stuff after sitting for a while...not pleasant. A fresh dose fixed it, but it's not considered an ideal product any more. Many use the Geo Method, we use Odorlos and have excellent results, lots more quality products available and various forms....tablets, granular, liquid, packs. Time to stand in the black tank department and start reading labels.

While obvious, things like diaper wipes, feminine products, paper towels, etc definitely are NOT to go into the tank.
