Hi gang....I am a first time possible seller to a dealer and want to know if what I am being offered is fair? I have no idea about wiggle room for purchasing trailers. I would love some feedback from any of you.

I am thinking of trading in my water damaged Jayco Eagle 2010 28 ft front kitchen double slide for a 2015 Avenger rear kitchen. I am being offered 8500 because of water damage in bedroom and being charged 32,000,000. I have been told there is wiggle room and that I should be asking for either more for my trade in or taking more off the new trailer. Thanks for helping me.

We bought the Avenger 32BIT which stickers in the low to mid 30's. I think they showed an MSRP of $36,995. They had it marked down to a RV show price of $26,995 and we finally closed the deal at $23,900. There is definitely room to play on these things.

I did a nationwide RV search on RV Trader, found the best price in the country on the exact same model and started my negotiations there.

Do you haggle when you buy a new (to you) car and trade in your old? Or do you pay full window sticker price?
I am not trying to be a smartalic here... so people do / some don't. I always have on vehicles but that was about it. Then I had a Boss who haggled on EVERYTHING he taught me well... jewelry, chain saws, mowers, I even got 10% off the Weber Grill I bought for the camper because I asked! All have wiggle room and most people nowadays look at the price tag and just fork over the money without even trying. I blame the big box stores mentality. Clerks can't budge there, but if you go to a local retailer he sets his price and profit margin so he can decide to take a little less.

I would not take the first offer... work him, I would even suggest to low-ball him... He will come back with a counter offer. If not, at least you tried.

As others have said, you don't give us much to go on. I was just offered 18,500 for our rig and it's in great shape. That offer was to apply to anything I bought at that dealer. The point is, make sure you are doing separate deals, not simply taking the trade-in value off the MSRP of the Avenger.

As for the new trailer, shoot for 30% off MSRP. All the dealers will laugh at that except the one that says "Okay." And there are plenty of TTs that go for a lot more than 32k.

Ok that makes sense. The damage is not great. I was thinking of trading up anyhow but was unsure if buying and trading worked like buying a new vehicle. I appreciate the advice.

If I had a water damaged trailer that was bad enough for me to want to get rid of it, I would be happy to dump it for whatever I was offered.
No one here can tell you without seeing the trailer - Roof ? walls ? floor? or all of the above?

$32k sounds like more than any new TT outside of an Airstream. My guess is the avenger should be closer to $20k.

It is impossible to save what your trade is worth without see it depending on how severe the water damage is. If it is great the trailer is probably not worth much........even repaired it will not be worth as much as an undamaged one. But the new 2015 is different the rule of thumb is there is about 20-25% mark up in retail prices. (If you know what the list price was to start with) Search the internet for the new make & model which may give you an idea what other dealers are selling the new models for (all dealers will not list prices) but realize there will be some differences & shipping can vary even $1000 due to distance from the factory and dealer overhead.

Treat the deal, as has been suggested to you, as if it's two deals. You are selling you're item to someone, you are buying an item from someone. In your case, the offer from the dealer for the Jayco will be on same page as the price of the Avenger, but you'll still have prices for two different units to consider. Get estimates from another repair shop to repair yours. The Jayco is new enough to find some identical models, get prices for used, undamaged. Deduct the repair amount from the cost of an undamaged Jayco. The Avenger sounds new...30% or more off MSRP is about the norm. Most Jayco's have good resale value.
