We had a small pup that we pulled all over the east coat with a Subaru Impreza and it worked great. The Sub had a tow rating of 2500 lbs.
I would guess that the thing has REAl canvas on it. If so, you can probably sew the canvas back together. I would get in touch either by phone or on the net with someone that makes sails for boats. I'm sure with a little bit of research, you should be able to get some info on waterproofing that stuff.
