Except in a case like this ... my wife's car has a gas cap, thank God!
Some butcher of a gas station attendant rammed the nozzle so hard into the filler tube that he broke off the little metal spring-loaded door and it disappeared into the tank. Still can use the gas cap to prevent fumes from escaping the tank.
What would one do if that happened with these newer vehicles?
