No interior lights...

I have a 1979 Scamper. We bought it last September and so we cleaned it up and stored it for the winter in a Quonset. The interior light were working last year and now only the break lights and other exterior lights work. We've checked inside fuses, flipped breakers, and we can't seem to figure it out.
Any ideas?

Towing and connecting to 2013 Nissan Titan.

The cord that plugs into the truck is for you tail/running/brake lights, not the interior lights. You will/should have a battery on the trailer, for you trailer brakes to work if your trailer comes loose from your truck. A converter is usually found around/with your breaker box, and supplies 12VDC to the lights inside your trailer. You AC power is supplied from the power pedestal at you campsite with a power cord to your trailer.

You truck may also provide 12 DC to your trailer IF it is wired to do so.

    Hope this helps

    You guys rock! It works!

  • Your battery is dead and depending on a lot of things; may be toast. You need to plug the camper "power cord" (not the cord you plug into the truck) into 120V and everything should work fine (your truck is not 120V). After being plugged in for a while, you can unplug it and see how long it goes before you have no power again. Depending on the answer to that question will determine whehter you need a new battery or not.

Secondly, you need to learn how the 12V, 120V, and the "umbilical cord" to the truck operate; and what you can and can't do with each. There is a link for that but I don't have it, maybe someone else can provide it.

It runs off ac power cord that plugs into the truck.
  • Interior lights get power from trailer battery and / or trailer converter. Exterior lights (brake, turn, running lights) get power from the tow vehicle. Two seperate systems.

    Things to check:

    1. Trailer battery - If battery has a couple shorted cells, it will act as a very large resistor, and draw more power (trying to charge) than what your converter will put out. There is nothing left to operate any 12 volt systems, even when plugged into shore power.

    2. Master Fuse /Breaker - Normally mounted on trailer frame where positive battery lead is connected to the trailer. Looks like this.

    3. Trailer ground - Follow negative battery lead, to where it connects to trailer. Check for loose / broken / coroded connection.

    4. Use a meter to test fuses in fuse panel. Visual check is not always sufficient.

    5. Converter - Check output voltage.

Most likely, it's a fuse or battery issue.
  • Are you plugged into ac power or running off batteries?
  • What did you use to maintain the battery charge when trailer was stored and what do you use to recharge battery when you use the trailer?

Sounds like a dead trailer battery.
