no see ums, midges & pop ups

I just got back from a (mostly) great trip at Assateague Island National Seashore. During one of our nights we were absolutely miserable because of the no see ums/midges that came through the screens. It was too hot & humid to sleep all covered up and the breezes didn't come back until the next day to give us relief.
I hesitate to spray lots of bug spray on the mesh (dissolve it?)
Has anyone had luck putting up an extra layer of mesh to keep them out? If so, how was it attached?
Any other ideas?
Thanks!
  • We ran into the same problem a couple years ago. What a miserable night!

We bought some no see um netting to put up in the wing bed.
We have not had to use it yet, so can't report on how well it works.
We also got some Picaridin bug repellent to use inside the the camper as it will not harm plastic or nylon fabric.

That product is a 20x20 mesh. Florida noseeums will laugh at that. Save your money. The one thing that works are fans. They cannot fly in a strong breeze.

Wow, I worked in the screen business for years and people from Florida bought this stuff up. Never heard any complaints that it didn't work. But I don't live in Florida either.

Well I did live in Florida for 35 years, on a salt water canal where they are the worst and tried 20X20 mesh. I can state without a doubt, it did not work for me. 20x20 mesh made no difference at all. I can only speak about SW Florida.
  • Large box fans are great to keep the area relatively free, but since you were in non-electric sites, I can only suggest something like the Thermacell insect repellent products. They run off of batteries so work well in an off-grid situation. I borrowed some and thought they did the job with mosquitoes and supposed work for no see-ums, per the company.

We never had much luck as well keeping them out. Mommabear always uses the Skin so Soft product from AVON...

When we are in the mode of pulling fresh cool night air in the rear windows and out the fantastic fan perhaps we pull them them thru the trailer and exhaust them out just as quick ???

Just sort of goes with camping I guess...

  • Spent years in the keys and Bahamas. Found a couple things that work. Yard Guard on the screens from the inside in the day time when opened up will help keep them out during the night. Also they make a small bug zapper light we could hang in the rig. That worked very well. And while living in the Bahamas we found Hydrogen Peroxide rubbed on your arms ect will help keep them from eating you alive. But it will turn the hair on the arms ect white..

Loved our years there but really do not miss those little critters.
