Oh, the weather outside is frightful ...

The weather is cold, most attractions are closed, so let's go camping!

But where? Looking for ideas of a place or places, say three hours or so from Washington, DC, to go camping for a few days next week. Does NOT have to be a commercial site, in fact, would much prefer that it not be.

Ideally close to a historic site or simply a pretty place to hike and past the time. Paved roads not a requirement. 😉

All suggestions welcome.

Only place I have camped within 3 hours of DC (unless you count the Walmart nearest the Philly airport?) is right on the Shanandoah River near Front Royal. Those were the first two night in our camper after flying to CT to buy it, picking up my wife at the Philly airport, then driving back to denver almost exactly 6 years ago. We really enjoyed camping in a paid Rv park right next to the River with hardly anyone around in January. We joked we woke up in a John Denver song. The park was nearly empty and I remember being blown away by.....Stonewall Jackson's (?) route being chased back and forth over those mountains......

Beautiful area, tons of history, and less than 3 hours from DC (maybe)

I remember camping in our home made TC at Shad Landing on the Maryland Delaware Peninsula, Canoeing up river in the swamp and having a blast.

Since your post says nothing about driving a TC, I'd get a plane ticket to Sanibel Island, FL. Get there in about 2 hours from DC.

I would not worry about Valley Fever here in Yuma. I have been here since Oct and read the local paper, watch the news and have not heard of anyone with valley fever in that time. It was 80 on my patio today here in the Yuma Foothills

Yuma, Arizona is the pace to go according to someone's post yesterday, 80 degree weather, but another poster warned of Valley Fever outbreak in the Yuma area! But that might be more than 3 hours from DC.
