Oil change SHOCK

A friend of mine called yesterday and asked how much I was paying to get my Powerstroke diesel pickups oil changed and fuel filters changed. I told him I buy my filters ( motorcraft) on line for like $90 with shipping, oil at Wal Mart for around $60 and I change it all myself , so around $150 dollars.

He told me the reason he was asking was his wife took their 2011 Ram 3500 diesel to Big O tires and told them she wanted a oil change plus filters....oil, fuel and air. About an hour later she was told.... your trucks done... went to pay the bill and it was $415 for that truck to be serviced. I have never seen a service bill for a semi oil change that high... Told him thanks for the heads up on that I dang sure won’t be doing any business with Big O !! $415 for an oil change and filters on a pickup........No way !

That's why you get a quote UP FRONT. Honestly though, for a dealership to change oil and filter, plus two fuel filters that doesn't sound outrageous. I pay about $60 for oil/filter at the dealer (about what it would cost to do it myself...) and buy my two fuel filters for about $100 total.

If I were to pay a mechanic and dealer overhead, I would expect to pay 2 to 3 times as much.

I was on my way to Southern California a few years ago in August driving a Peterbilt and my AC went out . I called Peterbilt in Kansas City, Ks and they said bring it in about 8am tomorrow. Got there at 8 got in the shop about 10 and they were done about 2pm service mgr said I have your bill ready in a few minutes. About 20 mins he comes get me to take care of the bill .....they had run a vacuum on the system, put on a new AC compressor , a high pressure switch then filled it with Freon the bill came to $3100 I said to the guy what the......... he says, isn’t this a company truck ? The Big O story reminds me of my ordeal. I bought several new Peterbilt since then and never even considered buying one at the KC dealer !!!!

My Ram 2500 4x4 Diesel cost $248.00 for a complete oil change at the dealer where we bought the truck. I do the oil changes myself for about $140.00 depending on the sales I can find online.

I just had my Duramax truck serviced a couple days ago at our local GM dealer. $169.83 for Oil/filter change, air filter change, parking brake adjustment, tire rotation. Just the oil change which includes the usual inspections was $76.50 before tax.

Just one thought as I was reading through the comments here....one comment said 12 quarts of Delo= 72.00 at Big O, I was just thinking when Costco has Delo on sale its 29.00 for 3 gallons(I think that's what I paid last time)...so I guess the markup is at least twice!
At 33 quarts for the MH, I do my own also!(Costco for Oil and Filter Barn for all my Filters)

Husband should have taken that Ram and the bill back to the store and had a chat with the Manager! I would have him explain WHY she was not given a pre work estimate?
And then ask that Manager if they rely on repeat customers?
Thats just Highway Robbery! Sounds as though they took advantage of her!
Unless of course she did sign a work estimate!

Oh and those that buy all that stuff and take it to the mechanic/ shop to have them do the work,,, had a friend that worked at a speedy lube place, Didn't matter,, they got the cheap filters and what ever was in the big blue barrel for oil! Unless you crawl under there and check your just guessing that they used your stuff! Or you stand there and watch them!

Always ask prices up front.

Always ask prices for add on’s.

If it needs it, it needs it. Ask prices, decide yes or no. Get it done or not.

In absence of that, you’re foolish, don’t ***** about it.

Vehicles are expensive, need servicing. You, your wife, your kids, whomever, should have SAFE and reliable transportation.

If you dance you have to pay the band.

Either do it yourself, or find a good locally individually owned shop you can trust and depend on.

If you go in for an oil change, and are advised you also need an engine air filter and cabin air filter, and you ok it, expect a $100 bill. Did you get a price for doing so? Then, no, you didn’t get charged $100 for an oil change.

It's called buyer beware and lack of knowledge about vehicles. Some here are comparing apples to oranges and some of it is getting charged very smartly just for being unaware.

My friend has two trucks, a gas Ram 3/4 ton and a diesel 1 ton Ram .He got his 3/4 tons oil changed last month at Big O and it came to about $60 something so she was in town and knew the 1ton needed service and thought since her husbands truck was serviced for 60 it shouldn’t be too bad . When they told her $415 she said she was shocked......Big O should have told her it is going to be exspensive. Oh well, they lost some customers for life and the oil change story will be told many times I’m sure.

Some of you guys must be getting Gold Star service at your dealers. Last oil change on my F350 6.7 at my Ford dealer was about $160. And my only effort was to sit in the waiting room for an hour. No mess and no oil to dispose of. And after 4 oil changes, I get the next one free. So I take my DW's Expy there also. And it counts in the 4 changes. So I save the free one for my truck's next change.

I buy my oil (Rotella) from Amazon and filters (Baldwin) too and change it all myself. Buy everything in bulk to keep price down.

On my '15 F350, it gelled up on me and I had no clue what happened at 1st. Dealer couldn't get me in, but their sister dealer should and right around the corner from where I was at. Truck limited to 25 mph. Got truck to them/inside and they come back telling me it gelled up and would be like 350-400 bucks. Asked if filters were made of gold ($150) and no way was I paying that kind of dough. Told them I'll pay them for their time and be on my way. Surprisingly, it thawed out while inside and zipped home w/o a hitch. Called NAPA up and got a filter for 90 bucks. Discovered later I can get Motorcraft filters online for 55 bucks. Granted this is fuel filters I'm talking about.

As for dealer,I asked about oil changes and believe I was quoted 2-300 bucks. Like some others, can do it myself for under 150 and a lil time. Have a couple buckets/pails I put used oil in and local place takes it for their waste oil furnace.
