Older Dually...

Going to be needing a dually again.

The pop up shopping made us realize that we don't want a pup.. Lol.. Plus, where would we haul the golf cart? Fast math and TT tongue weight, plus golf cart, plus precious family and I need 1.5 tons of payload.

My last Dually was not comfortable due to the XL trim with the fixed vinyl bench seat.

Need the DL on Lariat or XLT seats from 99-04 SuperDuty trucks... We're they comfortable? How about the GM Dually trucks? Comfy or not so much?

Last truck was a V10....didn't realize how hard it is to find a gas Dually with higher than base level trim... They all seem to be diesels...8.1 diesel seems to be pretty elusive too. May have to go to the dark side and get a 7.3.

Thanks for the feedback on the seat comfort on the 99-05 ish trucks. Seems silly to ask this question but it is hard to judge a seat based on a quick test drive. The XL bench wasn't bad on the test drive... 1200 miles into a trip and my back was screaming.

A correction to your original post which you might already know, the GM 8.0L was a gas engine, not a diesel. I highly recommend that engine if you can find one. I had one in an '01 dually. It was quiet, smooth, powerful, and got 10 MPG no matter what.

Thank you for the feedback, I knew that the 8.1 was a gasser...pretty big typo calling it a diesel... Lol. Thanks for the catch!

Yep, the old 99 had a fixed front seat, non adjustable.. If I could have simply laid it back some it would have made a huge difference.

Thanks!

I ran a 2001 Ford F350 XLT for 250k. The 7.3L IH engine is a workhorse. Comfortable, easy to drive and could pull up to 14K no problem. If You can find a decent deal on a 1999 to 2004 you can't go wrong.

We have a 2000 F350 Super Duty SRW (4WD). It obviously isn't as comfortable as the new trucks, but IMHO it rides fine. It has a cloth interior and IMHO the seats are very comfortable.

It doesn't ride like a luxury sedan, but it certainly doesn't ride like a tank either.

It seems to me that you can go to any larger junkyard and find a comfortable Lariat leather seat!

Or find a place to re-do any seat that you have. They can let you select from several fabrics or leather. .

Like others have said you can get a newer seat from a salvage yard, they are interchangeable.

Hi, thanks for the reply. We sold the Dually a few years ago and are looking to get back into camping.

When I bought my 99 I nearly bought a 96 F350 CC LB Dually psd in XLT trim. Those seats were awesome but DW thought the SuperDuty was prettier than the OBS Ford.

Thanks for the comments. I really appreciate it!

If all is well with the current truck, why not swap out to newer seats? Can find many on craigslist or at salvage yards. In my 94 rangr I installed bucket seat with electric controls for about $100. Wife siad the seat was too high so I shopped around found another set from an eddie baurer (both sides electric) for $100 and installed the electric base on the passenger side.

You can probably find the upgraded rear seats from later trucks also. dont know if you have the 4 door or a supercab, bu the stuff is available unless you really want a newer truck.

Replaced it with an '00 F-350 and the low line bench seat in that one was one of the most comfortable of any truck I've ever owned.

YMMV.

IDK what year it was but I do know in 99 the bench seat back was not adjustable and stood to straight up and down for me. My 06 that I drive now has the same seat but the back is adjustable and man what a difference.

OP, I have always loved the Ford Captain seats with the fold down arms. I had a 93 that had them and my BIL has an 05 with them. I think they are about the most comfy seat in a pick up. They are right there with a Bostrom or Legacy seat riding in a stretched Pete 379.:B

Thanks for the opinions folks.

My 99 seat was the single worst seat I have ever had. Even my 79 F250's bench was more comfy. Just not sure what the deal was.

I know it's all a matter of opinion and comfort level, fact is that in the year models I am looking at I may need to be have some of the upholstery worked on any way. Seems all lariats of that era have ripped and worn lower seat cushions covers and side bolsters.

Thanks for the feedback on the GM seats too. The most comfy seats I have ever had were in my 02 Impala. I know GM can make a good seat.

Sounds silly to be talking cabin comfort but the fact is these HD trucks are up to the task of pulling a good size TT with either the gas or diesel motor.

Thanks!

I have only owned GMs so I won't comment on the fords. In my opinion the best seats GM offered were in the trucks from 2000 to the 2007 classic body styles. The 2 trucks I owned with that style seat was a 2001 and a 2003 both with cloth. I would put those seats on par with my lazy boy. I certainly won't say that my 2012 is uncomfortable but the seats are harder and aren't as "bucketlike" as the 2000-2007. I will say that the high mileage/high seat time trucks from that era seemed to break down over time, which these newer style seats may not as bad because they are a firmer material.

But as others have said its all a matter of opinion.

What might be comfortable to me might not be comfortable to you, were not all built the same. My buckets in my XLT are comfortable to me. That said I just bought a XL with a cloth bench seat and after a 6 hour drive home my back was just fine and I was not cramped up.

The only problem I have had was a friend bought a new BMW, after 3 hours I was ready to get out.

I have a 2001 f350 dually crew cab lariat. Great truck! Comfortable and hauls my 40' toy hauler. It does have a chip, two transmission coolers, upgraded suspension, exhaust, etc. If towing heavy look at an exhaust brake. Awful mpg though.
