Painting cabinets - what about brown trim / bead / welt

I was going to paint some of the cabinets in my TT - at least the large fake wood expanses. They have this plastic round trim bead at every inside corner to hide the seam (where you'd have baseboard or quarter round trim in a house). The material is brown plastic which would look like hell if I painted the cabinets. It can only be replace if you pull the cabinets out - since it's nailed between the cabinet and floor/wall.

Just wondering what people have done. I can easily cut it out, but might look rough and messy - maybe showing gaps?
  • I don't think I was very clear describing the specific part, but the last few guys picked up on what I concerned about specifically (other responses had some good painting tips though).
This page shows the trim bit I mean, just fyi:

They seem to have done what Paul suggests, which doesn't seem too bad - just cut it off and use normal quarter round like you would in a house. This will be a good approach for laying down some replacement flooring or carpeting too.
  • Can you just use a carpet knife and carefully cut the bead off and then use quarter round or shoe plate to cover the gap. (finish/seal/paint the wood before installing it)

    Paul...
  • I would not try to paint the vinyl bead, the paint will crack and fall off.
  • Mich, he's talking about the vinyl bead that they add to close the gap between the cabinets and the wall. Go look at yours, every RV is made this way.
  • Bin shellac base white primer will stick to plastic, glass, and practically anything else. Many years ago I primed some PVC pipe with it and then put on a finish coat of ordinary latex paint. Those PVC pipes have stood in my garden as low-voltage lamp posts for all these years and still look good!

I think Bin shellac would work on your plastic base molding. If the composition of the "fake wood" is unknown it might be a good idea to prime it with Bin also.

    Good luck and happy camping.
  • Are you speaking of the toe kick area. I cannot picture how it would be attached where it couldn't easily be removed and replaced with traditional painted wood quarter round.
  • I have painted cabinets in my home - they were builder grade so I have painted over the vinyl that typically covers the particle board sides. I scuffed it and the wood fronts with fine grit sandpaper and used latex based Kilz as a primer. Don't use one of those scuffer pads - use sandpaper. Then as Westend states, I used the top of the line paint, but from Benjamin Moore - it is a latex that performs like an oil based paint. Expensive but very nice paint. Expect to put 2 coats of both primer and paint on your cabinets. You will be very happy with the results.

Can you replace the plastic trim with wood trim?
  • If you use the right primer and finish coat, nearly any surface or material can be painted. I'd suggest to visit a paint store (like Sherwin-Williams) and inquire about painting the cabinets and trim. They will be happy to give you good advice about the right materials and techniques.
