Placing brake controller in a Yukon

I recently purchased a 2012 Yukon. I want to install a brake controller. I'm right-handed. However, there is very little room on the RHS of the steering wheel before the Navigation screen butts out. Also the surface is very vertical until way down almost out of arms reach.

Any suggestions on placement of brake controller in this vehicle ? Thanks.
  • I have WD and sway control for my trailer. In the booklet description it seemed this could work against an OEM integrated brake controller. The dealer confirmed this was the case.

I have a constant numbness in my left hand, which is why I prefer RHS locations.
  • Note that the dash has 'knee' depressions for both left and right knees.

Even belted will have the potential of sliding far enough to poke a brake controller
mounted in those knee depressions into your knee...

Good idea. I put mine on the right side because I occasionally hit my knee on the dash getting in and I didn't want anything sticking out any farther.

    comparison
  • I installed a P3 in my Silverado and mounted to the ash try door...I don't smoke and never use the ash try. The tray door is near verticle but the P3 is easy to reach and see now. Not sure where the ash try is on the Yukon...

You should find out how much the OEM integrated one costs. Mine is here which works fine, despite also right handed. I only have to use it to check the brakes work.

Unless things have changed GM specifically states in a TSB that adding the integrated cotroller after manufacture is not possible. Look up "PIT4729B" for information. Sure seems like a sweet way for GM dealers to rake in $500 a pop with a BCM reprogram to keep their market share private, but they didn't have the foresight.

I attached mine to the dash with HD velcro. Makes the install completely reverseable, easy to watch, adjust, and test. I pull it down when not in use, but I have to put up with a fuzzy square on my dash. I prefer LH mounts for Right handed people. In the event that an application or adjustment is needed on the fly, I keep my dominate hand on the wheel.

  • Which one are you installing?

The prodgy P2 I use allows 360 degrees of mounting- as long as the front to back axis- is exactly perpendicular to vehicle travel direction.
I ended up with an almost vertical mount in my Expy.
