Please Travel Safe this Memorial Day Weekend

My wife and I just returned to upstate NY after our trip to Ocean Lakes in Myrtle Beach. We took at new TT on it's maiden voyage and had an excellent time.

I have traveled on I-95 for years, back and forth to Florida and primarily by car. Towing a trailer to SC gives you a whole new perspective on travel......so please be careful this weekend and anticipate that the car beside you, behind you, and especially entering from the on ramp is going to do just about the dumbest things they can to just get in front or around you. I could not believe what I saw, especially between Baltimore and Souther Virginia. Things got much calmer in NC and SC.

Some of you may say this post does not belong here.....but I just want all of you to have a safe and enjoyable trip with your trailer.
  • That ocean lakes is a huge campground for sure. :) did a drive through when at our timeshare in the area, Presidential Villas at Plantation Resort, couple years ago. have not stayed there as we did not have our airstream yet.

Having driven a tractor trailer in my younger years I learned how to keep an eye on traffic and try to outsmart the idiots out there. Nowadays you have doe heads texting and driving 70 MPH which really makes for some interesting stupid moves.

I agree with you on towing a trailer in SC. We went down to florida in late march for spring break week and to pick up "new" airstream in sarasota.

The traffic going south was a bear, going along and then coming to a stop, rolling and then back up to speed.

Coming back with airstream using PO's WD hitch which was not really setup for my truck, did make some adjustments. I can tell you SC roads especially I-95 is ROUGH as hell.. It was like being on a county road hitting bumps and heaves which really upset the whole deal.

I love the cheap gas/diesel in SC but hell, get 2 or 3 more cents a gallon and fix the fricken road. Got detoured through savannah by google maps due to traffic stopped up ahead exiting on I-16 to hwy 17, aka ocean hwy, and that was rough as a cow trail.. I have pictures of cracks in the road with grass growing in them... in bad need of repaving.

I always hated driving north on I-95 especially past Richmond up towards and around DC.. nothing but nutcases in cars..

hope you had a nice maiden voyage :C:)

Happy Memorial day and thanks to all the vets we appreciate your service.

  • We usually go to our own place up in Michigan for holiday weekends. This year we decided to go to a public campground and join the rest of the campers out there and see how it goes.:B
  • :) Hi, with the rare exception that we are on a long trip, we virtually never go out on Holiday weekends. We will stay home.
  • A good post..it is a whole different perspective when you are towing a trailer. Things are wild out there on the interstates now. I was doing 70 plus in our van last Friday, was passed by someone pulling a trailer doing almost 80. I never could catch up to him...hope he made it to his spot okay.
  • I gained a ton of respect for truck drivers after getting a TT. I just stay in my lane and keep it steady and do my best to avoid all the idiots. I've made the drive from FL to MD and back a few times with the trailer and people certainly keep it interesting.

    Stay safe out there!
