- mkirschNomad IIWhen looking at an older truck camper, you should only have four considerations:
1. Condition
2. Do you like it?
3. Condition
4. Condition
Anything that's been around 10, 15, 20+ years can't have too many "cons." It's well constructed and/or was well cared for. Any problem areas or weak points have already been fleshed out for you. Nothing on it can't be fixed with common standard RV parts and/or a little ingenuity.
Well I did think of another consideration: Will it fit your truck? Up until about 1987 trucks were pretty much all the same size and shape. Then they started messing around with the box size and cab height, and haven't stopped. Truck beds have been getting narrower and deeper, so older campers will not necessarily fit in newer trucks without modifications. That could range from having to build a platform for the camper to sit up on so it clears the bed rails and/or cab, to having to modify the structure of the camper so it fits in the tailgate opening.
