Interesting how much the trucks have improved over the years. Compared to the 1996 Silverado my 2011 2500HD Duramax gets the same mileage empty and much better mileage loaded and in the mountains, while providing 765 ft lb of torque and 367 horsepower.
On a recent 3900 mile trip from Monterey to Montana and traveling through Wyoming, Utah, and Nevada with a 3700 lb. load weight the MPG average was 13.5 and that included a lot of miles with 20 MPH headwinds.
