Prodigy Brake Control Problems

I am having problems with the brakes on my trailer and could use some help. When I hook up my trailer I get many different readings. Today when I hooked on I got the reading S.H. During the trip home I would go from c to numbers, then to S.H and sometime P.L.. The frustrating part was when I hit the brakes I would get the reading of numbers like it was working and then it would show P.L. or N.C. and it would feel like I lost the brakes.
Before the trip I had the trailer checked and they said there was no problem with the trailer brakes. I even hooked it to the bumper connect thinking there was a problem with the connector in the truck bed. It sounds like a short, but where do I start?
ANY SUGGESTIONS
  • I was getting that type of display without trailer connected, plugged in replacement Prodigy and no more issues.

I had a very similar problem in late summer doing what you describe .....the problem was a bare wire in the axle tub hitting the axle off and on and more on than off until no trailer brakes.

Same here. My old TT would have SH and OL on the Prodigy display intermittently. I found the OEM wiring on the trailer chassis was a mess with a bunch of crimp connectors on the daisy chained wires.

My solution was to install a brake + buss bar and run dedicated 12V and Neg. wires to each wheel. That gave me clean, solid connections and I never had another problem.

  • I had a very similar problem in late summer doing what you describe but then all was good. On the trip south in late October our brakes acted as you tell and the problem was a bare wire in the axle tub hitting the axle off and on and more on than off until no trailer brakes. Easy fix at an alpenlite dealer in Stockton Ca. Now we have the wire zip tied to the back of the Axle on the outside. That was 16 years ago and no problems.
